Scales.  And more scales.   And even more scales.  The key to playing bass is the ability to be told a key (or figure it out if the guitar player doesn't know) and the create a line in a relatively short time frame.  As in "minutes."

Playing bass well is harder than playing guitar, as a grounding in theory is almost a necessity.

Someday we'll win this thing...
