Topic: Cooking today.

I love to cook.  But it's been so busy and I've been so overwhelmed that it's probably been two years or more since I've spent time in the kitchen.  Today the girls and I are going to make Thin Mints ice cream (my wife was able to hide a few boxes from me) as a treat, a couple flavors of scones for tomorrow's breakfast (sadly we could not locate any dried blueberries), and a huge pile of nachos for dinner.  Tonight there will be dishes!

Nachos and ice cream were good.  I am one fat hillbilly tonight.

Nachos and ice cream on the same plate Zurf?  Strange mix but not so many dishes to wash.  Any spare breakfast scones?

Wow, I never knew you were a cooking sort of guy!  Was that homemade ice cream?  My husband makes an effort to try to cook dinner at least one night each week to give me a little break, usually it's on Sundays.  Last night however I mentioned making pizza and he gladly played games with the kids while I went to it.  There's nothing quite like homemade pizza... except maybe nachos!  Good choice!

Re: Cooking today.

No.  Not on the same plate.  First the nachos then after a suitable clean-up period, the ice cream for dessert.  This morning my daughter and I ate the scones we made.  The apple ones were good, but could be improved upon with more sugar and seasoning the apples instead of the dough.  I haven't tried any of the berry ones yet.  Perhaps at snack time.

Yeah Amy, I love to cook.  It's just that the past several years have been so busy that I haven't had time.  My wife is much more of the "hot brown food" sort of cook to keep the family fed and healthy on a day to day basis.  When I get rolling, I spend all day in the kitchen and it gets expensive.  But now that fall has come to the Shenandoah Valley, it's time for a beautiful drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway and pick up some heritage apples.  The Shenandoah Valley is serious about their apples.  It's time to get a couple bushels and put up some applesauce.  The kids love to do that one with me too.  I usually do that cooking outside in my camp kitchen.  It makes the whole neighborhood smell good.  Folks drop by to visit.  We share a glass of cider or wine or what-have-you, depending on who it is and when it is.  It's all very suburban.

I love to cook, and as a single dad shacked up with an Irish woman that doesn't know which end of the pot the water goes in, I get lots of opportunity.    smile

Someday we'll win this thing...

Re: Cooking today.

Ahhh you have it made Zurf!  I miss suburban life... been in this rural town for 8 years now.  Applesauce, apple pie, and apple crisp is a must for us NY'ers too of course.  I hear the apples were ready early this year, I hope I haven't missed out on good pickings as I haven't gone yet.

Jerome... LOL!  "doesn't know which end of the pot the water goes in" ... almost spit my coffee out laughing out loud at that one!  Good for you to have plenty opportunity to cook!  Take a break now and then and order in my friend!

Re: Cooking today.

Hey Zurf; all sounded very good!  Me, I too, like to cook.  I find that I can use my creativity in the kitchen to come up with "new" food combo's or creations or just to whip up something quick for dinner.  Since I am retired and Christy goes off to work everyday, I do almost all of the cooking except on the weekends when she is off work.  I figure if she goes out each day to work, the least I can do is something I enjoy and have dinner ready for her when she gets home.  She appreciates it and it makes her happy and you know the saying: "if momma ain't happy, nobody is happy."
By the way, I have four apple trees and this year was the best they have ever produced, so I have been finding all types of things to do with the abundance of apples.  The best part of your story is spending time with the kids.
Wayne; we are all waiting for your song inspired by this post!

Re: Cooking today.

My wife rarely lets me loose in the kitchen but I love it when she does. The last time I was in charge of dinner I did beer battered fish and chips, I don't know why but it just sounded good. As usual it cost a small fortune and created a huge mess in the kitchen (which is why I am not allowed in there often) but the reviews were good, I even heard resteraunt quality in there. I am usually just in charge of the grill outside but sometimes it is fun to get inside and get creative.
