Topic: minor scales

Just had my third guitar lesson and my teacher is speaking a different language.  Does anyone else on this earth know what lydian, mixolydian, aeolian, dorian and phrygiam mean?  Are these minor scales, how do apply these?

I think your teacher needs to be told by you that you do not know these terms and needs to explain them too you,if he will not you should get another teacher now!!

I'm not going to attempt to explain what these terms mean (as I have no idea), but I believe they are "modes" of a scale. There is more information available at the bottom of the page here:

Third lesson and discussing mixolydian scales??  Wow....Either this teacher thinks you are a genius, you are a genius, or he's just full of himself and wants you to know how much more he knows than you do. I've been playing guitar since 1974 and I can only discuss blues scales and whatever Carlos Santana plays. Those two items are not in your teachers list. I get by just fine.  Dorian is a type of column isn't it??  Good luck finding a new teacher.

junas, I'll jump back in here. What do you want to play? Guitars aren't pianos, which I play much better then I do guitars. Guitars are expressive!!! I love the guitar but I'm a dwarf at it. But I sure do love to play de blues as compared to playing jazz piano!! IMHO

junas you have to listen to them topdown is correct they are modes and each has its own feeling a free program you may find useful is Guitar Alchemist it sounds all the chords and  modes and contains all the scales as well as over a thousand chords with hundreds of ways to make them all over the neck and the price is great free! smile

Next time he drops those on you, say the following.

"Why don't you just teach me major scale patterns for now?"

The trick being, if you know the major scale, you know every single one of those modes, too.

And remember, don't worry about modes.  If you know one major scale pattern, you can play all 84 modal scales, even if you don't know what they're called.
