Topic: Trussrod nut
Hi folks, just bought a Tanglwood guitar and found that the trussrod nut has been rounded off,
can I just take off the nut and replace with a new one,or is it more complicated than that?

First thing I would ask is this a new guitar and can you get it replaced or return it? If not you need to think seriously about taking it to a luthier tp have the job done.
This isn't something you would undertake lightly. Besides the fact that it will need to be correctly adjusted to ensure that the neck is correctly tensioned, if there were a problem removing the nut and you damaged the threads on the truss rod this would require rethreading or a replacement and both of these options would entail removing and regluing the fretboard.

Hi Ian, bought on ebay several months back, this only came to light because I changed the strings for extra lights and had slight rattle on low E.
Thats when I decided to tweak the trussrod.So can't really go back after this amount of time and compain about it.
They would only say that I did it. So thats why I will try myself. Thanks for your imput will let you know how I get on.

Hi John,
I may be trying to teach my grandmother to suck eggs or have completely got the wrong end of the stick here but I have to ask.
Are you sure that it is rounded off and is not one that needs an allen key to adjust it? Usually the ones needing an allen key are round and also some types of electric guitar have two holes in the nut at 90 degrees to each other that are turned with a bar.

I had the same thought as Roger.... However if it is an allen head that's been stripped out, I have taken a cutting wheel on my dremel and put a slot across the bolt head and used a flathead screwdriver for future adjustments..... This can't really be done if the adjustment is at the headstock but if it's inside the soundhole, it could be an option for you. Pics would really help us to help you

Roger, yes your right, I have been vey careful not to go where I have not been before and it has paid off.
The entrance to the trussrod nut is round,but push the allen key further in and guess what, it fits.
Problem solved!
