Topic: Shipping guitars

One of my clients from the shop came in with his Ibanez acoustic last week. It had been shipped from Sweden to Portugal in a cardboard guitar box with no packing and the strings had been left at normal tension. This is the result:

The moral of this tale is to make sure any guitar shipped is well packed and padded and the strings are all slackened off.

He has written the guitar off and brought it in to break for spares. However, liking a challenge, I am going to attempt a repair, but there is quite a bit if timber missing and plenty of filling will be needed. Finger crossed.

Re: Shipping guitars

Valuable lesson here. If you're going to ship something like this make sure it's well padded and protected. I guess postal and shipping carriers around the world are about the same, grab it,toss it and forget it. Looks like quite a challenge to repair, lots of luck with it

Re: Shipping guitars

Oh MY!  I think I would be scared to ship a guitar even with proper packaging and padding!  I had purchased electrics for my boys for Christmas and while they were very well packed, they were ultimately in cardboard boxes.  One of the boxes was ripped open pretty badly (everything was safe inside).  They only had to come across the states.  Very sad to think that this poor fellow can't just "return to sender" and insist on a "replacement".  I am assuming this was not a new purchase.  I can't imagine the feeling he must have had when he opened that package up!  Good Luck Roger... let us know how the repair goes!  smile

Re: Shipping guitars

It's so sad to see something like that happen. Don't shippers care at all?

Funny side note. I used to have to ship car parts via UPS and the driver hated me. I would have to fashion boxes to fit things like mufflers with tail pipes attached and he would cringe when he saw a very odd shaped oversized box. But really in the end how bad is it for him? He just throws it on the truck and off he goes.

Re: Shipping guitars

Shipping a guitar is bad enough. My Martin Bacpacker stows easily in the overhead bin on a plane.                                                  Shipping a tuba is a nightmare. When we flew out to Seattle last year, I shipped my well packed and padded tuba a week ahead via U.P.S. ground. If it had any new dents, I couldn't tell.

We pronounce it "Guf Coast".
Ya'll wanna go down to the Guf?

Re: Shipping guitars

I had my last guitar shipped to me from California, to the east coat. We both discussed the shipping proceedure before it went out. It was a high end Breedlove, and I would love to tell you how nervous I was the whole time in route. It arrived safe and sound. Never ship without doing some research first.

Re: Shipping guitars

I would never ship my guitar.
When I travel I take it with me on the plane with my FAA waiver taped to the front of my gig bag. It goes right in the overhead. And if they have any issues I would slack the strings and take the neck off and stick it in all in my backpack and DARE them to try anything.

I've seen the carelessness of shipping workers. I couldn't even consider putting my guitar that I love and spent so much time building into anything less than one of those aluminum shell internally reinforced guitar boxes.

Re: Shipping guitars

OK then, it was a long break down the neck and I guessed that gluing her would be sufficient. So she was glued and lightly clamped so as to not squeeze out all the adhesive and left for 48 hours to dry well. Then quite a lot of filling was needed to replace the splintered timber from the edges of the joint. Plenty of sanding down using ever finer glasspaper (1000 grit to finish) and then staining. The original timber did not take the stain too well although the filler coloured fine, and then several coats of lacquer later she looks like this:

The headstock had a black highly polished veneer finish and a large part of this was missing so a custom made truss rod nut cover was made to hide the damage:

She was restrung 24 hour ago and I am pleased to say she plays very well. The owner is coming in on Thursday and does not know that his written off guitar is back in one piece so I hope he will be pleasantly surprised and pleased with the result.

Re: Shipping guitars

I've had two guitars shipped to me in the past and never a problem.  It is kind of scary though.

Re: Shipping guitars

Hi Roger, I was wondering how much time was involved in making a repair like this?

Re: Shipping guitars

Thanks Wayne, Zurf and Pete.

Scott, it was more a labour of love and an experiment to see if it would repair so I did not log the time spent. Also sourcing materials like woodstain can be very time and petrol consuming here in Portugal. However I estimate that the actual work hours stripping her, repairing and refinishing the neck then the rebuilding was about 5 hours.  Howard, who owns the shop I work part time in, took an hour and a half to make and fit the false truss rod nut cover. Of course there was an extra hour or so playing her to make sure she was OK which is not accounted for smile. It is very much a stop and start job waiting for materials to dry.

Re: Shipping guitars

Great job Roger! Looks like the repair went really well! Judging from the reflection, it looks like you wouldn't even be able to feel it... Smooth smile

gotta say it really looks terrific nice work Roger smile

Re: Shipping guitars

Pix after giving her a good work out I cannot feel that she has been repaired and although the stain did not take on the timber that had the original stain sanded off, on a first glance it looks like a grain marking.

Thanks Russ.

Roger, it looks like you've done a wonderful job with this repair.  Do let us know what the owner thinks of it when he comes in!

Re: Shipping guitars

Very nice reconstruction Dr. Guppy. Hopefully the owner has not made another purchase yet. Well, may be we should hope he did so you can keep your patient.

Has the truss rod been adjusted yet? I was curious as to if it will handle the stress of adjustment since the anchor point area has been compromised.

Keep Rockin!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Shipping guitars

Zguitar, the neck was absolutley straight when restrung and tuned so no adjustment was required. The truss rod mounting is in the unbroken part of the neck so I am hopeful that it will be OK.

Amy, the owner, who has at least 5 other guitars that I know of, came in today to do some recording and we left his guitar on a stand in the studio and said nothing.  He noticed that there was a guitar similar to his and asked if he could play her. He started to play, looked and looked again and said "This cannot be my guitar but it is!". He was over the moon, so another satisfied customer.

AWESOME!  And he had no clue that you were fixing it right?  That's fantastic!  I hope you got some cash out of the deal, but the smile on his face, I am sure, was excellent payment.  Those are the good things in life right there!
