Topic: "I Coulda Been"

This is kind of an autobiography song with an attitude. It is not meant to offend anyone . I grew up in an oilfield camp in rural North Dakota and bussed 40 miles to the nearest school on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation grades 1-7 . We lived in a trailer house and I have been in the oilfield most of my life.

A popular bumper sticker through the years

" Please don't tell my mom I work in the Oilfield, She thinks I'm a piano player in a whorehouse."

So anyway I have recently wrote a couple love songs and I don't want folks to think I aint an ornery old cuss so here goes !

I Coulda Been

(G) I was born in North Dakota, Most Folks (C) aint heard of it

It's (D) way up in the Northland, truth is , most don't give a sh*t (G)

Raised in the Oilfield, schooled (C) on the Rez

In a little ole trailer (D) weren't so bad my momma says (G)

(G) Daylights, evening, morning tour (C) just a way of life

It was a (D) tough old hall and tuffer on the wife

(G) Chased rigs from Montana to (C) Texas near and far

Seems we (D) always stayed too long down at the local Bar (G)

Chorus 1

(G) Well I'm a son of a roughneck (C) I'm proud oilfield trash

Don't (D) give me no lip son or I'll have to whoop yer (G) Ass

Yeh (D) don't give me no lip son or I'll have to whoop yer (G) Ass

Nasty Guitar Solo

(G) Coulda been a doctor , or maybe a big star (C)

But here I am a (D) Roughneck, I guess that's who I are (G)

Fifty years and countin, (C) folks say I been around the block

But,(D) don't give me no lip son, or I'll have to clean your clock (G)

Chorus 2

(G) I am a son of a roughneck I'm (C) proud oilfield trash

(D) Don't give me no lip son or I'll have to whoop yer (G) ass

(D) Don't give me no lip son or I'm bound, bound, bound to whoop some (G) ass

Re: "I Coulda Been"

Okay Wayne, you scared me into believing you.  Now, how about.......wait a minute........ I mean, would you please give this a record and share it with us.  I so much more enjoy when I am able to hear it performed.  If you please, Mr Roughguy?   I don't want you to get mad at me and "whoop my ass"  LOL

Re: "I Coulda Been"

Every time I even think about getting tuff my wife reminds me I am a 50 yr old man , and who's butt you gonna kick smile

I will get this recorded when I get a few days off, I am sitting on a rig in rural Wyoming for another week. This one just popped up and I thought it would be a fun beer drinkin song.

Re: "I Coulda Been"

It's interesting to get a little more history on your life Wayne (and glad I'm not the only one that spent a little too much time in the Bar in my youth!  LOL).  I'll be thrilled to hear this one when you find the time.  The words to me have an old folk song type of feeling to them, or possibly just a serious down home country flair.  No doubt with the way you play, it will feel far more country than old folk.  Although, I bet this one could be played either way!  Round the campfire, or all filled out with some bass and lead!  NICE JOB!
