Topic: "Ghost of the Mountain Mist"

I worked out some music that seems to fit the mood of the song. Thanks for the push to make this into music from all our Chordie Poets. Background for this is my father’s tales about all sorts of stuff including the ghost of the mountain mist. As was mentioned on the Poem forum this should be played a little bluegrassy if you can. I heard a banjo in my head, although I can't play one (wish I could) as I was writing this so if you banjo it let me know how it goes.

Ghost of the Mountain Mist By Jeff Gilpin

Finally finished June 29th, 2010

Intro

Strumming Dm for 4 beat

[Dm]Riding with my father

[F]Back when I was young

[C]Heading back up Old Fort Mountain

[G]The day was almost done

[Dm]Crawling down the mountain

A [F]solid bank of whiteness

[C]Dad said not just any fog bank

It’s the [G]ghost of the mountain mist

[C]Comes out in the evening

The [Dm]ghost of the mountain mist

[C]Seeing is believing

The [G]ghost [C] of the mountain [Dm]mist

See [Dm]way back long ago

[F]My dad explained

There [C]was a moonshining mountain man

Worked a [G]still up this way

[Dm]Had a reputation

Best corn [F]liquor to be had

[C]Made himself a fortune

[G]Until it all went bad

[Dm]The sheriff of the county

[F]Aimed to shut him down

[C]Went hunting for the still

In the [G]mountains just out of town

The [Dm]mountain man got wind

From [F]those who bought his liquor

[C]Didn’t want to loose

His [G]fortune making elixir

[Dm]So he built some other fires

To [F]try and hide his smoke

[C]Fanned it all around those hills

That’s [G]when the mist awoke

[Dm]Mist and smoke it hid him

[F]That moon shinning man

But [C]also hid a drop off

[G]On the way back to his camp

[C]Comes out in the evening

The [G]ghost of the mountain mist

[C]Seeing is believing

The [G]ghost [C] of the mountain [Dm]mist

bridge

[C]He didn’t [G]see it [Dm]coming

[C]Fell [G]long and far be[Dm]low

[C]Sheriff [G]heard that [Dm]eerie scream

[C]Long sorrowful and [A7]slow

[Dm]The sheriff found the still

[F]Chopped it up to bits

[C]Went back down the mountain

[G]Hoping to forget

That [Dm]scream he heard while searching

For the [F]still that misty night

From [C]then on he swore he always heard it

[G]On those misty nights

[C]Comes out in the evening

The [G]ghost of the mountain mist

[C]Seeing is believing

The [G]ghost [C] of the mountain [Dm]mist

[Dm]So dad had surely spooked me

With the [F]story that had told

Then he [C]rolled down his window

Even [G]though the night was cold

Said, [Dm]Son if you just listen close

[F]On this misty night

You [C]might just hear that scream too

And [G]give yourself a fright

[C]Comes out in the evening

The [Dm]ghost of the mountain mist

[C]Seeing is believing

The [G]ghost [C] of the mountain [G]mist [Dm]

Re: "Ghost of the Mountain Mist"

Love it.  Great story line.
It held my attention well.
I can't find anything to gripe about.

It's a keeper,

Re: "Ghost of the Mountain Mist"

as i said on poems, this is a cracking little number, i could just about imagine it in bluegrass time, but i think you should be the one to record it and let us know how it's meant to go. any time soon?

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Re: "Ghost of the Mountain Mist"

Hey Ark, Robert and Roger - I'm waaaaaay behind in my recording but I will try and make time. My "recording studio" (aka basement) has been taken over by my Daughter, Son (err)in-common-law, and grandbabies so I will need to relo up to my office (aka the guest bedroom I took over once the basement got the new tenents).
