Topic: Have you noticed...

I can do so many more cool things on my uke during the winter time, and it's all because of long-sleeved shirts!

My right hand sleeve, which rubs up against the saddle and bridge, is capable of creating tons of great muting effects, both intentional and unintentional.  It's kind of like having a third hand, and I really miss it during the warm weather months.

Has anybody else made this type of observation about their instrument, whether related to seasonal clothing, standing vs. sitting, etc?

Me with my first ukulele, a Junior Beatles model, in 1966.  After Mom threw it down the stairs in a fit of rage, I became a drummer for life.  At age 43, I bought my second uke...

I have not noticed that.

It seems like we had a similar discussion here a few years ago and Southpaw said he used a scrunchy on his wrist sometimes when playing for that very reason...  Or maybe it was something else he used a scrunchy for.... Oh well, I can't rightly remember, but it rung a bell smile

Not that there is anything wrong with that

What the heck are 'scrunchies'???

Now a 'crunchie' is a rather delicious chocolate bar but 'scrunchies' is jibberish to a Brit smile.

My wife has those 'scrunchie' thingy's, they are for hair, like a pony tail or something like that, like a beefed up
elastic band....

Re: Have you noticed...

Ha ha ha!  A scrunchie is basicly an elastic band encased in fabric for tying hair up with into a pony tail.  Sometimes we call them "pony holders" too!  smile  Some are small, some are bigger... so yes many of them will fit around an arm.

I've fought with my sleeves all winter long, as it seems they just got in my way.  I'd pull them up... once in a while I've used a scrunchie to help hold a sleeve UP out of my way while playing so that my sleeve is NOT muting the strings on me smile

Re: Have you noticed...

Wait...I thought the scrunchy is supposed to SUBSTITUTE for a sleeve, not keep it out of the way?

Anyway, I tried it last night and the scrunchy just kept getting caught in the strings.  Perhaps it was the wrong type, with too much loose material.  I think what I need is a sweat band for the wrist.

Hey, we may have laid the foundation for a whole new industry here.  Summertime Muting Scrunchies for guitar players!  Anybody have a good name for this invention??

Re: Have you noticed...

Oh there are MANY different types of scrunchies... some are fluffy, some are frilly... there are even some that are terry cloth like a head band... in fact, there are cloth headbands that girls wear in their hair ... but not like a "sweat band".  Yeah, I guess a scrunchie is kind of like a wrist sweat band though!  LOL!  I guess whatever you name your new invention, will have to be somewhat masculine!

Sounds like you just need a sleeve... cut off the sleeve from an old shirt and try using the scrunchie to hold the top of the sleeve up near your elbow?  Don't make me get my sewing machine out!  smile

Exactly!  It's the sleeve that chokes the strings just right for that stuff.  Perhaps our new invention should be called the "Ska-runchy!"
