Topic: Funky Sound

Hi Looking for the Funky 70`s sound as heard on "shaft" by Issak Hayes.
and allmost all Porno from the 70`s.
Tried a wah wah peddle but still something missing.
Peace Out

Re: Funky Sound

I would say clean, with wah and lots a reverb.

Re: Funky Sound

Thank You Craig.
I will try that and keep you informed

Re: Funky Sound

try using an envelope filter. if that doesn't work, do a talk box.

I usually go for Dunlop but researching the Auto Wah and talk Box My local store has Danelectro brand pedals in both .
I like the look of these pedals Do either one of you gentlemen have any Experience with this brand?
Thanks Again

Re: Funky Sound

I have a morley wah. It has the sound, but the "sweep?" is not exactly how I would like it. Shaft. Not that I'm some kind of expert on wahs or anything. It just seems that from 0 to 40% is just mud, 40-60% is the sweet spot, and the rest is just way to bright to do anything with. Shaft. I have seen a way with a variable "Q" I think they called it, but I don't recall who made it. As with everything with guitars, Go to the stores and try all you can find. I have tried the cry baby and liked it more than my morley but have never tried anything else. Shaft! Its been in my head for a couple days now. If you really like that song you should check out this instrumental album that the beastie boys did called "the in sound from way out". It could be the soundtrack for every Starsky and Hutch show ever.

Re: Funky Sound

Thanks Craig.I am going to I tunes as we speak

Re: Funky Sound

I think danelectro is a good brand for the price. I have a couple of their boxes and they sound pretty good. as for a wah, I'd go for a Behringer Hellbabe. they're only about 50 bucks and they sound godly.

Re: Funky Sound

Thank You Dan
I will look into that one.

Re: Funky Sound

A wah is a big part of it. Start with a bright, clean sound - Fender single coil equipped guitar into a clean amp. Find the sweet spot in the travel of the wah pedal - the point where it makes the "wah" vowel effect. Next, play a funky chord thing using a lot of minor 9ths, muted and unmuted, precussive string rakes and so on. Sync the pedal operation with the pick attack so the pedal starts set to a very dark tone, strike the string so the pick attack sound is 'in the dark' then quickly move the pedal through the wah effect to a a thin treble-y tone. You can even mute the strings and just pick out a choppy, precussive noise while you work the pedal.
