V1
[D]I fondly do recall when I first saw your smile.
Your [G]auburn hair flowed gently with the [D]breeze.
[D]You said you were hitching and just trying to find,
Some [E7]piece of mind,
Not [A7]ties that bind.
[G]When I looked into your eyes, you [D]looked down and away.
[G]I felt something burned you deep [A7]inside.
[D]A single tear rolled off your cheek onto the ground.
Then you [A]smiled,
Just a [D]little smile.
V2
[D]And said your name was Jane and you were twenty one.
Old [G]enough to travel through this [D]land.
[D]And bold enough to fly as high as one could go,
In [E7]rain or snow,
Where [A7]no one knows.
[G]When you looked into my eyes, I [D]saw your troubled soul.
[G]I felt there was something else to [A7]hide.
[D]You said you've gone a thousand miles with millions more to go.
Across [A]mountains high,
Where [D]eagles fly.
V3
[D]Then you said Momma died two years from yesterday.
And [G]Poppa's drink will be his dying [D]day.
[D]That you couldn't take the pain of what has past.
[E7]Then you laughed,
A [A7]hurting laugh.
[G]When you looked back to the ground and I [D]felt you slip away.
[G]I didn't have the answers youre[A7]quired.
[D]I didn't have the means to heal your tears inside.
So I [A]wiped your eyes,
Such [D]pretty eyes.
V4
[D]When you said goodbye we hugged as life long friends.
You [G]said you heard your calling in the [D]breeze.
[D]You said you'd be alright that you found peace of mind.
No [E7]longer blind,
Your [A7]eyes were kind.
[G]When you walked away I felt your [D]sadness in the air.
I [G]waved to you and wished you fare thee [A7]well.
[D]In two days time on Jackson Line, we found you in the breeze.
Be[A]neath a tree,
An [D]old oak tree.
So I place [D]one long stem red rose, by your graveside set apart.
From [G]two white carnations for your Mom and Daddy's heart.
I'll lay [G]three yellow lilies up a[D]gainst the old oak tree.
Where [A]angels took your hand to set you [D]free.
[A]Sleep my new found angel,
Be at [D]peace.
