Re: Olympics

Yep, I'll be watching quite a bit of the Olympics this year.  I like both summer and winter olympics.  It should be an exciting time this year.

Re: Olympics

Love em! Can't wait to see the mens halfpipe and ski cross, downhill sports are awesome! Though my snowboarding doesn't really get along with my guitar playing. Last year i broke a finger and couldn't play for like 3 months. lol

Re: Olympics

Yes ! I love the Winter Olympics.
A lot of my clan love skiing, they go to Austria, Usa, some own Gites in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc.

Heres our wee group.

Aoife Hoey and Claire Bergin or Leona Byrne will become the first Irish female bobsledders in the Winter Olympics after a relatively successful European Cup season.
Kirsty McGarry will be Ireland's representative in alpine skiing;
Pat Shannon in the Skeleton event;
Shane O' Connor, alpine skier, finished in the top 50 of the Slalom event at the World Championships, the best ever result by an Irish male in Slalom.
PJ Barron, a Scotsman who declared for Ireland through parentage a year ago will be Ireland's representative in the 15km Cross Country skiing event.
Barron was chosen ahead of Paul Griffin who had previously represented Ireland in the Summer Olympics in rowing, finishing 6th in Athens and 10th in 2008 Beijing. Griffin did achieve the standard for selection but Ireland was only granted one available spot in cross country skiing.

You know Babeye, there's complaints already about our wee group. It appears the other competitors don't understand the Irish way of training !!
You know, late night singing, a few bevvies,  a good old session of River Dance !  Sure thats what keeps us all as  fit as fiddles  here lol lol
Heres a wee taster.

Re: Olympics

It will be interesting, that's for sure.   The winter here has been entirely mild, and they are having snow problems at the event site.  And by "problem"  I mean "There is no snow."    There's snow at Whistler, but at Cypres, which is at a lower elevation, they've had the artificial snow machines going for weeks, and are using helicopters and buckets to bring in more from higher elevations.

I was up in Victoria a few weekends ago (about 100 miles from Whistler) and it felt like spring.

Re: Olympics

Lets hope we can have a clean Olympics without any doping crap going on.

Go Canada big_smile

On a sad note it was just announced that a Georgian luger was killed in trials today.
My condolences to the family.
I saw the video and the area of the accident looks pretty dangerous. I don't know what they were thinking when they designed it. I guess time will tell.

Re: Olympics

We take the winter Olympics really seriously here in the Uk. Our female bob sleigh team has made the headlines for their unique ventilated body suits. Which gives them a slight edge when  taking off at the start.

Re: Olympics

Ark!  LMAO!  That was pretty funny, even I'll agree!

Old Doll... the Riverdance stuff is amazing!  I do love to watch!

My favorite Winter Olympic events are figure skating and speed skating.  I find it interesting that snow boarding is in there ... years ago that was saved for the "extreme" games!  The Winter Olympics always reminds me of "Cool Runnings" with John Candy (RIP funny man).  Good movie, and it'll probably be on the movie channel or something this month!

Interesting fact, the Jamaican Bobsled team first debuted in the Winter Olympics in Canada in 1988!

Re: Olympics

Tragic event at the Olympics Georgian luge sledder Nodar Kumaritashivlii was killed during a practice run this coupled with the hundreds of demonstrators tossing garbage and the opening ceremonies glitches and weather(lack of snow) marred the beginning of this event.

Re: Olympics

That was a sad thing.  It'll be interesting to see what they change on the luge course to keep this from happening again.

Re: Olympics

My goodness !

Ive just read about this tragedy here now. How very sad. Such hope and joy in his planning for the olympics. His time was now.
May his spirit rest in abiding peace.

Deepest sympathies to all concerened.

Re: Olympics

I watched the luge accident.  It was awful.  I knew as soon as I saw it that the kid was dead.   He came off the luge at the bottom of the run going about 130kmh, hit a pole, and came to a complete stop almost instantly.   It reminded me of Dale Earnhart's fatal accident.   All that speed and no where to scrub off the energy.

Tragic.

He is amazing to watch, and even amazing to see that brazen orange hair!  I remember him from the winter X games before snowboarding was an Olympic event.

Lots of fog going on during all the ski events.  CRAZY!  Well, I guess it must be warm there... geez the slopes must be rough!
Everyone was having slower than average speeds on the luge too due to the warmth.  I'm thinking Quebec or Ontario might have been a better choice for these snow events??  Or is it just a bad (warm) winter?

Re: Olympics

I did catch the closing cermonies with Neil Youg singing "Long May You Run."  He did a great job.

Yeah. It was also good to see Michael J Fox. I usually find these things quite boring but I really enjoyed the closing ceremony. I must be getting old.
