Topic: Old Blue Songs.

I began writing this song some months ago, I tried putting it to music and failed, so I found it under a stack of papers on my desk today, just words, so I put some music to it and added a few extra lines and here we are. Because it mentions "love" I thought it was about my wife, but after reading it I can see it's about my mother, who loved nature and could name all the birds in the garden! And she gave me my love of music, as she used to sing to me all the time when I was a kid, my brother and sisters don't sing or play any instruments.
As I've said before, I don't know where this stuff comes from, and I don't ask

Old Blue Songs Tonight.Undefined

[D] She walks down the street like she's riding through the countryside.

[Bm] Head to one side her [A] face full of smiles.

She [D] looks at all things like she's seen it for the first time.

She [Bm] smiles at the wind as it [A] messes-up her hair.

[G] Old blue [A] songs [D] tonight.

[D] She walks through the door trying to be invisible.

[Bm] Like she's not really there, not [A] looking for the fame.

She [D] sits by the window looking at the garden birds.

[Bm] Dreaming of the pasture lands, [A] wishing she was there.

[G] Old blue [A] songs [D] tonight.

(CHORUS)

[Bm] Sing your [A] songs with [D] light, with [Bm] light.

[G] Don't be [A] fooled by the [D] one who talks with [Bm] spite.

[G] Old blue [A] songs [F#m] tonight, [Bm] tonight.

[G] Old blue [A] songs, [D] tonight.

[D] In her mind she will wonder over rolling hills and forrests.

[Bm] Bounding mountain streams and [A] watching birds in flight.

She [D] lays in the sun, daisies all around her.

[Bm] Savour every moment as [A] day turns into night.

[G] Old blue [A] songs [D] tonight.

(REPEAT CHORUS)

[D] She walks in my room with a smile of contentment.

[Bm] Glad for this day, will there [A] be many more?

I [D] look in her eyes and I know why I love her.

As [Bm] each day goes by, I love [A] her some more.

[G] Blue [A] songs [F#m] tonight, [Bm] tonight.

[G] Blue [A] songs [D] tonight, [Bm] tonight.

[G] Blue [A] songs [D] tonight.

the recording will be along soon.

Hi folks

this song can now be found on MySpace, click the link to your left.

hope you like it

Phill

PS.

For those who might find the chords difficult to play, I used a capo on the 2nd fret, so I play a "C" shape chord for each "D". or you can play it using the table below;

for               D- Bm- A- G- F#m

play             C- Am- G- F- Em.

if I'm asked I can re-post it with the transposed chords. roll

Re: Old Blue Songs.

This song i just so lovely to listen to Phil.

The love and loss of your Mam is melodic both in your voice, music and lyrics.
She'd be very proud to know you knew the true  honesty of her spirit. A rare and precious gift to a child.

Lovely work Sir,

Old Doll.

A fine photograph in words and music, Phil.

Re: Old Blue Songs.

It appears that you captured her essence, Phil.  A hard thing to do for most of us.  Great job.

I have finally found happiness in my life.  Guitars, singing, beer and camping.  And they all intertwine wonderfully.

Re: Old Blue Songs.

Hi Phill
I really like the gentle feel to this number. Recording etc top notch as usual.
It's strange my mother played the piano and guess that where my musical bent came from. My brother and sister are not at all musical and my two kids have not shown any interest nor my grandkids..... I despair!! lol

Re: Old Blue Songs.

hello to all my good friends, thanks for looking, listening and commenting.

your comments are all welcome, but i apologise for the sloppy content! the guitar strings were a bit old and dirty ergo; lack of tonal quality, so i changed them after finishing the track, it's called "closing the stable door after the horse has bolted." ....only on chordie

hi ark, i have 4 kids, only one plays a bit of guitar, he's more into deejaying...now i despair!

9 grandkids, 3 of which have guitars, 8, 7 and 5 year olds, they think playing is banging hell out of them...they'll probably be the next big thing...

hi bensonp, thanks for that, my mam was a great nature lover and loved music and singing, we had an old radiogramme back in the 50's with all the old 78's of elvis, bill halley etc, plus my favorites "16 tons" and "the ballad of davey crocket".

thanks stransongs, how many megapixels would you say?

hi lena, thanks for those kind words, she is missed.

You have done yourself proud my friend.

Glad for this day, will there be many more?
I look in her eyes and I know why I love her.
As each day goes by, I love her some more.

Re: Old Blue Songs.

Phil, I don't normally read / respond to the songwriting forum, but I really appreciate those who record their originals. The talent here on chordie continues to amaze me. A most beautiful song and recording. It brought to me pleasant memories of my own mum. Very well done and I thank you for sharing.

I'm going to work on this one myself, but deliberately not check out your own version on your myspace...

just to see what rhythm and melody I find myself doing...
