Topic: HELP!!!

I absolutely suck at playing the F chord. Does anyone have any tricks to playing it?

Re: HELP!!!

Hey Zrizz,

Barre F right? I have been working on it for a long time.  I still don't have it down. Here's some tricks I've heard tho.

Get the big knuckle of your barre finger out in front of the strings and keep it even with your middle knuckle.

Pull with your fretting arm instead of squeezing with your hand. You'll have to pull your guitar into your body with your strumming arm to keep it still.

Try to roll your finger on it's side a little so it stays straight. If you try to play it flat your knuckles bend.

Try holding your guitar in a more classical style. Tilt the neck up so it gets your hand in a better position.

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE

That's the stuff I've heard and am trying.

Check out Justinguitar.com he has some good tips and lessons on it.

Re: HELP!!!

Everyone has trouble with the D chord at first, and then the F and B barres later.  Everyone.  Eric Clapton, I GUARANTEE you, had trouble with the F and B barres when he first started.  Practice it.  It's an un-natural position and it requires strength to be applied in ways you've never applied strength before.  Only practice will get your fingers used to those positions and only practice will help you to build the strength (which includes finger exercises).  Just realize that you are in extremely good company.

Wow thanks! I actually saw an immediate improvement when I tilted up a little bit!

Re: HELP!!!

Something to remember is that you are only holding down the E, B, and e strings with your barre. Another is that you can actually squeeze too hard and that will just wear you out. Try to relax and apply just enough pressure to do the job. You can also try tuning your guitar down a half step till you get the technique down so there will be less string tension.
