Topic: Rough and Ready
I've had those three words written down in a lyrics notebook for about 6 months. This finally fell into place this morning.
Rough and Ready.
You hired me for the summer season
Back in 82
Me a kid of 18 years
Lean and lonely
Tall and bony
Wanderin' where the west wind blew
Now I can't help the hard skin on my hands.
Can't help the wind-burn on my arms.
Can't help the oil smears on my clothes
Can't help the fact you know
That I can't help the love that grows
For you.
And I have worked your rich, green pastures,
Drained your meadow land
Built you barns and planted orchards
Green and lovely,
Land of plenty
Nurtured by these two strong hands
It was you first called me Rough and Ready
Now that's become my name
Town and Country call me that-
Rough and Ready
Sure and steady
Yet you will scarcely shake my hand.
Lady I can't wait forever
Seems love don't grow like corn.
I'll have to find a bag to pack
Cos lean and lonely,
Tall and bony
Rough and Ready's moving on
Rough and ready that's just me
