I'm not sure if "Bands/Artists" is the right place to post this, but it seemed most applicablle based on the description. What software does everybody here use to record/edit/produce their music? I love SONAR 4 Producer Edition, along with Fruity Loops for some added effects. Sometimes I use N-Track when I'm just recording some ideas. I'm interested to see what else is out there.
I am lucky enough to have no recording device... However I do have a 4 track reel to reel that has no reels with it. I need to get some basic recorder at least.
I record on a Tape Recorder a 10 dollar tape recorder
I use GarageBand with a Firewire 410 interface.
Cubase SX, tricky but all the beginner could need.
I use double deck tape deck used for Karaoke. Great for multi track recording
I use cakewalk pro I think they are on there 3rd
edition now. The one I have does 32 tracts, with
busses, aux send and return. They biggest bang
for the buck. It sells for around $150.00. Every
thing else that is close starts out around $300.00
and then just goes up.

I use a cheap mic with Adobe Audition.
A Fostex-VF80 Digital 8-track recorder hooked up to a 300-watt Kustom PA stystem and some mid-way decent mics that I can't remember the brand name of. No software (lousey computer) but the Fostex does it's job (the manual is worse than a hangover, though, and makes a lot less sense).
I use multitrackstudio lite, the free version of multitrackstudio. It only gives you three tracks, but if you record two tracks and then bounce those two to the third track then start over with the third track you can do this with as many tracks as you need.
The only downfall is you have to do your mixing as you go along.But if you are only recording for your personal use it does a really nice job.

like lespaul I use cakewalk too, version 3. I find it fanstastic.
I have fruit loops on my pc too but still trying to work a lot out on it. I have no instructions as I illegally downloaded it ( oh yeah downloads are great)
i have a 4 track somewhere lying around, not used it in years but that was really good for its time.
I use a PZM mic coz I have not found any other mic that is good enough apart from a compression mic but the one I used was about £120 and though too dear, stick to the £50 pzm.
What mic you use makes a big difference.

upyerkilt,, hi,, ive read a few post from you and i think you may be able to help me. ( plus im scottish too ! <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif" border=0 alt="Very Happy"> ) im billy,, and i have a technical problem,, lol... i have a zoom 1266 multi track recording studio,, a pc,, and a programme called acid,, which i believe is a recording studio programme,, how can i link the multi track to the pc ? i've heard something about a midi interface,, but im unsure as to what that means,, or even if its for the studio or the p.c,, i'd really appreciate your help on this if its possible. thanks

I am afraid i cannot answer you right now as I dont know the answer just now. But I have a friend that wires everything up into his pc, keyboards, guitars, sound pedals etc. I will ask him but will not see him until friday. Will answer as soon as I can.

Just spoke to my mate.
He says he plugs his effects pedal, guitar and anything else he wants to record straight into the computer's mic socket.
Now, I am not telling you to d othis, just saying this is what he does.
But if you are thinking of doing this I would turn all settings volumes etc all the way down first then gradually move them up.

thanks ken,, i appreciate the help,, but my pc doesnt have a mic socket, my studio ( zoom 1266 ), obviously , does. i'm goin nutz here, today i got guitar pro 5 for the pc.. and id love to get some of the percussions on to the studio,, i just dunno how to link them up..please ,, please help,,, and as a side issue,, are you in scotland,, if so where ?... cheers ,, and happy jammin 2u <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_confused.gif" border=0 alt="Confused">

not got a mic socket? i thought ever sound card had a mic socket in it?
hmm, if I were you I would buy a new sound card. Dont have to spend that much on one, even get one out an old computer, one that does have a mic socket in it.

sadly not,, tho its a good idea that i'll be looking into some more, thanks a lot ken,, much appreciated. at least i've got something to work with now.
i bought a tiny sony mic that plugs into the mini disc,it's brilliant sound quality,you can clip it to your clothes whilst singing & playing your instrument.it's a good way to do it,easy to use because if your recording goes wrong you just delete at the click of a button & start again,you can name each song on there too.only thing is i'm unable to transfer it onto cd as i dont have the gear to do so, so if you know what i need or should do,please reply. cheers

IF you can record and store it on your computer then you should have no probs puting it onto cd.
You have a few choices.
You can burn a wav file onto cd but cannot play it on a cd player. The wav file is most likely to be the format that you will record the song, ( or maybe a RAW file and will have to transpose it to wav, just download a convertor)
You can transpose a wav file to MP3 or audio( which can be played on a cd player) with a convertor, Nero has the relevant convertors in it, but if you get the free edition like me, you will have to eventually have to download an MP3 convertor. they are easy to find thru google and FREE!!!!
NOw, if your problem is you have no facilities on your pc to burn a disc ( as in, you only have a cd player and not recorder) then you could save the songs onto A memory stick and take it to another computer that has cd burning facilities on it and get it onto cd.
Another good thing for recording is a program called cakewalk guitar pro3. it has 32 or 64 tracks for recording and very good for transposing songs onto wav file, again like nero it has an MP3 covertor but only a trial version.
Also the sounds of this microphone yo9u have is crap. Might sound not bad but for recrding good quality music on a computer you really need a condensor microphone ( something I need also but cost a friggin fortune) PZM microphones are really good, I get a loan of one now and again and it is so much better than my £25 microphone.
