Guitar chord forum - chordie → Acoustic → IM STUMPED....HELP ME PLEASE!!!!
im sure this has happened to almost anyone who has played guitar...im stumped...i no you people r gonna say just keep practicing but i dont really have anything to practice...ive been playing for about a year and i am all self taught...i consider my self to be a desent player...ehat can i do to getout of this stump and become a better player? I have found that I will stump when I am trying to learn a long sought goal.And I am famous for biteing off more then I can chew.
To get out of a Stump I'll listen to one part of a song about 15 seconds .and I will play it over and over till that one part I thought I would never learn is so easy that I wonder why it caused me so much trouble. and then the rest of the song is a breeze.
One thing that has helped folks going through a "stump" (slump, perhaps?) is to try something totally different.
Completely different style of music, maybe even a different instrument.
We do have a tendency to "practice what we know"; like the first poster said, set yourself a goal of new material or technique to master.
Don't really know what you mean by stumped. Do you mean that you feel you have reached a point where you are fed up playimg the same songs over and over; or do you feel like you have reached your peak but would like to go a bit farther?
Don't know if you've done this but how about looking into music theory of the guitar in a bit more detail. I've tried it and still find it a bit daunting; but then I'm still happy bashing out the few songs I know at the moment. And still finding new ones to challenge me, which doesn't take much. <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_confused.gif" border=0 alt="Confused">
I dont know how long youve been playin for but theres certainly no shortage of songs to learn. If your in a rutt try finding other people to jam with. I found when I started that I got better a lot faster when I started jammin with someone else. Dedicate time every day to play but most importantly dont give up. It will all be worth it when it kicks into place.
I too am pretty much self taught......playing about a year.....and am well enough to play gigs by myself, so I guess i'm pretty decent. I get into those slumps as well. When I do i force myself to learn something new that I thought was really complicated.
I don't know if that helps you any but just wanted to throw it out there for you.

As someone who is self-taught and has been playing for 24 years, I can tell you there have been plenty of periods when I felt the same way. I know you have heard it before but all I can say is keep playing. Noodle around a lot. If you do have a decent ear, you will recognize note progressions of songs here and there. When you find those, stop and learn the notes, Then try and play it on different parts of the neck. This will help you to connect the entire guitar instead of being trapped in a box. You should also read, "Zen Guitar, " by Philip Toshio Sudo. It is a great book of inspiration for all levels of guitar player and will help you to gain a new perspective on your music. perhaps try and learn a different style to play. for example, if you mainly play strumming songs, try finger-picking songs
When I get into a slump, the very best thing is to pack up the guitar into the closet and ignore it for a few weeks. It is amazing how good it sounds when you pull it back out. Something changes in your style and you just relax and remember why you are doing it, for me it's because I love the sound. That is also why I play a 12.
find someone to jam with, maybe trade licks.
A former teacher/instructor of mine told me the best way to learn faster is to write some songs and write in a way that will challenge you to improve...hope that helps.
We never did hear from this guy again. I wonder how he got on. Or even if he's still playing. Oh well...
