Topic: Excellent acoustic for the $$$

The Zager line of acoustic guitars is really awesome and the prices are far less than that of guitars that are able to compete with the sound quality and construction. Although, I believe that Denny Zager the CEO may have retired!

Re: Excellent acoustic for the $$$

Hey Maximumod and Welcome to Chordie!

Now lets talk Zager wink I hate to disagree with your post but am going to smile Denny Zager sells fairly cheap import guitars (mostly). Solid top, laminate backs similar in quality to almost any other "Martin Copy" import at half the price. All he does is set them up with his so called "String Science" and doubles the price. He widens the string spacing at the nut some and lowers the action... How well he does these are debateable... Several owners I've spoke to have complained about the strings being spaced so far that they have a tendency to slip off the fretboard and buzz during aggressive play. His website is very misleading as to the quality of his guitars and only after having several conversations with Denny himself did I finally worm the truth out of him... Don't get me wrong though, His guitars are OK, But way overpriced for what you get. For the price of his Zad line you can get into some real all solid models that are far better values IMO. It's like they always say "If it seems to good to be true, It probably is".  The problem with getting a custom set up from him is location and enviroment... Chances are the humidity and temp in your area will not match his, so even if he does set it up perfect when he has it, by the time it's shipped out and arrives at your location the set up has changed due to the change in environment. Of course these are just my opinions and your mileage may vary smile  All the best! -Pix

I will add that I've heard great things about his customer service!!

Dollar for dollar, I'll go with Takamine G series or Breedlove Atlas.   Both are great guitars at good prices, and both manufacturers have excellent service.  And if you want to go super high end, they can get you there, too.

Someday we'll win this thing...

Would love to hear more of your opinions on the Breedlove. I'm shopping for a smaller bodied guitar for Slackkey and Ragtime and have been eyeing the Breedlove om/sm at Elderlys.... We don't have any locally to try and was wondering how you would compare them tonally to say martin or taylor? Also What kind of fretboard radius do they have? I like a little curve to mine, like taylor or Yairi. Do you know how well they respond to bare finger picking? I know they have pre-war style scalloped bracing so should be fairly responsive but would love some feedback prior to ordering smile

Re: Excellent acoustic for the $$$

Hey Pix,

I have had a g series dread Tak and my daughter still has a small bodied tak. They come with great electronics as I'm sure you know. I have a martin HD-28 and a Yairi WY1 SB and are both very nice but the least expensive guitar and Best for finger picking is a Masterbilt Epi DR 500 MNS and I installed the B-band A.2 pickup myself.

I had it at our local guitar store wednesday and 2 fellows that work  there played it plugged and unplugged and were absolutely blown away with the setup and tone.
It has the smothest neck and is just a sweetheart . It sounds great flatpicking also but if I didn't know better I would guess it was a $2000 dollar or up guitar .

I don't know about how consistent they are,but this is a made in China guitar that is really something special and I have owned quite a few guitars and get to play alot of very nice ones.

NO,  I am not receiving any kickbacks from Gibson or Epiphone smile

Well, I've never been a huge Martin guy, particularly with later models, but I love Taylors.  When I get three or four grand to drop on a guitar, it will be a Taylor.

The Breedloves are gorgeous instruments.  They're built in the US, except for the two low end models.  The Atlas is built in Korea, but the QA and setup is done in the states.   Tonally, they've got a sound that I would expect from a larger guitar.  Mine cost around $800 with the better pickup in it,  including a hard case.  I play the living crap out of that guitar.  It's my regular stage guitar, and sees a whole lot of use.

Breedlove's service is fantastic.   I was having problems with the stereo jack on mine.  It was just a little loose, and wouldn't carry tone unless the plug was held "just so."  This is something that you can fix in about three seconds if you pull the jack.  But that may void the warantee.

I called them (They're in Oregon) and they put me through to the head luthier.   I told him what was up, and his response was "Well, that's a pretty simple thing to do, and it seems silly to send the guitar all the way here for it.  Are you any good with a soldering iron?"

"Why, yes I am!"  (And I am. smile )

"Alright, I'll send you a new part.  Call me again if you have any problems."

"Will this effect my warrantee?"

"Nope."

Five minutes later the guitar was fixed.  Two days later, I got the new jack (which is now in my washtub bass'  pickup.)    I love those guys.

I've got one hanging on the wall right now, too.  I'm putting a new saddle in it and cutting a nut for it, so it doesn't see as much action as my Breedlove.

Lovely instrument, though.

Re: Excellent acoustic for the $$$

I've been looking at a new acoustic for 6 months.
I was torn between the Cole Clark Fat Lady 1 and the Maton 225.
I've just made my decision.
I will be buying the Maton. A Maton EM225C at AUD1200.

Re: Excellent acoustic for the $$$

G'day Pining,  good choice on the maton em225c, I have had one now for 4yrs and it is a keeper for sure. Maton back up and service has been outstanding. Could not be happier. Only thing to be mindfull of is to watch the humidity if you live in such an area that has high humidity. A couple of tubes of a product called MUD, which you can get at most music shops will take care of this when placed in a case with your Maton.

Not one drop of my self worth depends on your acceptance of me.
