Topic: Your "first time" stories

Things have gone a little quiet on here so I’d like to ask a question and give you my experience:

Question:  When, where and to whom was the first time you ever played to or for someone?  I’m not talking about practicing in front of your partner or jamming with friends but actually picked up the guitar and played to someone?

Mine was on Saturday night and I still have the smile on my face, there I was, sat at my mates kitchen table at about 10pm, I’d been there from noon watching Swansea v Cardiff in the Championship, then England v Australia in rugby union, then Wales v New Zealand and we were killing some time before the boxing (what a fantastic day of sport even if all the results didn’t go my way!).  I’d taken my guitar as my mate has been learning about the same time as me and we often get a drunken jam in at the end of the night.  However my parents had turned up and my mate and me sort of decided not to play as sometimes a drunken jam can end a party quicker than anything.

Anyway I had never ever played for anyone before, perhaps when I first started playing I’d shown a few people some basics chords and short solos I’d learned but I’d never actually played and sung to anyone other than my mate when jamming or wife and kids when practicing.

Anyway, the men are in the kitchen chatting about blokes things while the women where in the living room doing what women do and my dad  says “go on then, give us a song!†  My heart just slumped to the pits of my stomach!  Now my dad is a straight talking, no nonsense drummer, not in a band but he has always played and he is pretty good so he’d be the last person I’d want to play for, plus I just wasn’t prepared.  On top of all this I had drunk more wine than I care to remember and I was worried that I’d make myself look a right plonker as my left hand fingers clonked desperately over the frets trying to find Em, Am, C..

So having no real excuse, or I should say my father not taking no for an answer, I pick up my guitar and start playing and singing a few songs from my book!  To my amazement my dad was clapping and singing along with a look of shocked surprise on his face.  I must have done about 10 songs and my father said he was shocked how good I was not even taking into account the fact I’d been learning only 10 months.
Even though I was pretty drunk the feeling of exhilaration, pride, satisfaction was incredible and I for sure won’t think twice again if anyone asks me to perform something.
I guess I am now a “performer† (lol)?

Re: Your "first time" stories

In college, I was a trumpet player in a rock band.
I always loved guitar and worked long and hard to learn.
One night I brought my guitar to a band gig and my bandmates laughed, at first, and then hid my guitar from me. I fished it out from under the bandstand and played it on one song we performed while adding a backup vocal line.
The guys nodded and patted me on the back and asked what other material I had prepared.
I felt great and greatful.

Re: Your "first time" stories

My first ime playing a song for someone was about 2 years ago. My wife had asked me to learn a song for her so i learned Must Be doing Something Right by Billy Currington. She liked it and it made me feel accomplished. Now I play and sing for her all the time. Now i'm working on writting her a song to play for her on our 15th anniversary in January. She hears me working on it every night and now she can't wait to hear the whole song. Since then i've played for my family and friends every time i get the chance and it feels great.

Musically - at all.  I was in the fifth grade.  That's how I practiced.  I would practice a song (on trumpet then) and play it for my parents.  They would try to name it.  If they could, then we considered the practicing successful.

As an adult, then it was jamming harmonica at a friend's reception.  There were a whole lot of empty wine bottles and a whole lot of different folks playing and doing different things musically.  Everything from the gospel song "This Train" to the children's classic "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain" to original folk music to the Swedish National Anthem was played by someone at some time during the weekend.  The whole wedding party was staying at the same Bed & Breakfast and the jamms went on all weekend in every nook and cranny, and spilled over into a fancy restaurant.  I can only imagine what the other patrons thought.

On bass, it was as a member of the praise band and we played every Sunday.

On guitar, it was at a campfire alongside the New River in West Virginia where there were a number of musicians and they were all extremely supportive of the 'new guy' playing guitar, which made it an emotionally safe place to do it.  This one was the hardest in some respects because it was the first time playing an instrument where I also sang, and also for which I was self taught.

Re: Your "first time" stories

1983, between sets on the bench press at the local gym, I sat and played air guitar to a Van Halen tune that was blaring in the air. A long haired, musclular gent asked me if I played guitar for real or if I was just posing. I humbly answered, " I'm in the process of learning". Gent ( Mike ) was in a band and they needed a rhythm guitarist. He extended an invitation to come jam with his band. I had never played with a group previously and was very new to the guitar. "What the hail" I replied, "it'll be fun". And it was! We hit if off great and within 4 months we had our first paying gig!!!! We drank, smoked, and played few tunes when we were able to stand and see straight for the first month or so and then realized that we were starting to sound pretty dang good. Our " practices" would often bring in 40 or 50 people on a friday or saturday night. Thus, this amount of ready and raring party people made it pretty easy for us to get gigs in a few of the local dives.

Ba-da-boom! This is how it all began! I'm grinnin' so big as I type this! I can taste the Jim Beam and smell the mari-, ah-hem, cigar smoke as if I was sent back in time!...............

Unfortunately, I've lost contact with each member of this awesome group. Mike(vocals), Chuck( lead guitar), Gary( bass), Gerald( drums), and I decided to call ourselves " Somethin' For Nothin' ".  We did so mainly because we played our first 15 or so gigs for free and figured we'd never make any money! ( haha) We had some amazingly great times and I will always cherish the memories........
