Guitar chord forum - chordie → Guitars and accessories → Need help w/guitar choice
Hi,
Can anybody out there suggest a good, "warm" sounding steel stringed acoustic? Something that sounds close to a classical guitar, so instrumentals sound nice, but can still project well if I'm just strumming/picking contemporary tunes. Price is an issue as well. Under $300.

Yamaha makes some really sweet sounding acoustics. You might try e-bay and enter "yamaha guitars" for what may be available. Kenny
[B][COLOR=crimson]I would suggest going to a music store and trying out several guitars...it's hard to buy an acoustic on EBAY and such without getting a chance to listen to it. Yamamha, Alvarez, Ibanez, makes some really great sounding guitars in your price range...if you do buy one that sounds a bit too "bright" for you then try different string sets...they can vary quite a bit in sound...I think it's always better to play them...or at least find someone who has one that you can try out and then find one on ebay...jg

I'll probably get some upturned noses here (hehehe) but ... i bought an acoustic Fender the other month and it really does sound lovely! I spent ages going through the guitar shops looking for the right guitar with only a budget of about £250. Tried all the usual Yamahas, Takamines and Ibanez etc. The Fender DG25S has a really warm mellow and deep sound if that's the sort of thing that you are after?...sounded better than most of the other more expensive guitars that I tried. My only advice would be to shop around lots and buy the particular guitar that you love the sound and feel of in the shop as the set-up can vary considerably from guitar to guitar.

have you found that the action has become somewhat higher on yours since you got it? In fact, can anyone out there explain to me please why this has happened? I intend to take it to someone in the next week or so to have it sorted out, but quite strange really!

Hello Awkward Strummer.Havent had any problems with it yet.It had a set up when first purchased about
year and a half ago.sounding sweeter all the time.Notice the top got a little darker but not too much.Time for a string change
and may take it back to guitar tech for a checkup.It cost about
45 dollars strings included.At least here anyway.

I have a Yamaha APX4 semi-acoustic that sounds so smooth and mellow.
The action is higher than my Fender Telecaster and your fingers hurt but you get used to it.
I nearly bought an older Ovation Applause but when I decided it had gone.
Try out a few before you buy.

I lean towards Epiphone, good guitars that age well with a descent price. If you are a beginner, shy away from the 'Masterbuit' series and try the base models. Play several however, they all are just a bit different and you just might find the 'one'.
Hi, FWIW, I play off an older Washburn, 22yrs old. I recently bought a Dean Exotic. Smooth playing and good action. Cost new, $319.00. Well worth it.

i'd say that your best bet is just a epiphone acoustic, and put nylon strings on it.
