AFTER OVER 20 YEARS OF NOT PLAYING GUITAR, I NOW HAVE MY 1st ELECTRIC. AFTER MUCH READING, I THINK I NOW UNDERSTAND ADVANTAGE OF "BARRE" CHORDS. I SAW IN G. <img src="index.php?t=getfile&id=129&private=0" border=0 alt="index.php?t=getfile&id=129&private=0">SHOP : GLASS & METAL "PIPES" TO FIT OVER FINGER, TO FACILITATE BARRE CHORDS' TONE. Q: IS IT POSSIBLE TO PLAY EQUIVALENT OF "OPEN" CHORDS, WHILE PLAYING BARRE CHORDS & USING A FINGER "PIPE" ? Q: WHERE, ON NET, MAY I GO TO, IN ORDER TO PRINT CHARTS OF BARRE CHORDS AND EQUIVALENT OF OPEN CHORDS (WHILE WEARING A PIPE)? Q: WHICH TYPE PIPE WOULD BE EASIER ON ELECTRIC G. STRINGS ? GLASS OR METAL ? I KNOW A PIPE IS "CHEATING", BUT THUS FAR I HAVEN'T GAINED PROFICIENCY OF PLAYING BARRE CHORDS. INDEED, IT WAS WHILE SEARCHING FOR BARRE CHORD CHARTS, THAT I CAME TO THIS WEBSITE. Typically barre chords are the equilivant of open chords in a different position on your finger board.(Please correct me if my statement is incorrect) A pipe as you refer or a slide for those who may not know what a pipe is is usually used to play slide notes changing the texture of your sound.


As you mentioned the use of a "pipe" to do a barre chord "well" what ever works for you. Here comes the "but" as you said you have not became proficient with out the use of a "pipe" to do barre chords.(implied) Don't allow this to become a crutch the only way gain proficiency is to practice barre chords is without your "pipe".


As far as preference to either metal or glass slides it would be a matter of choice. Which one are you comforatable with? If you buy a thin glass slide (experience speaking) they break, go for a thicker made one as well metal does not break. The use of glass came about by need of a slide by old broke country & blues players that cut a necks of coincide bottles to get their job done.(it worked)


For now continue what your doing practice, practice & more practice. Whatever it takes to get the job done.

The "pipe" is called a "bottleneck" and is used for playing slide bits.  It's not supposed to be a tool for the barre.   You should use your finger for that.


Barre chords aren't that hard.  They just require practice, just like everything else.

I prefer a thick glass one to metal on my electric and a metal one one accustic. Thats just me many fine guitar playersdo it differently. Sometimes I can be caught useing a Bic lighter, beer can or bttle or even a drum stick. No rules in music! I think you should keep working at it and master barre chords. It's cool that you discovered a neat little techneque so hang on to and explore that too.

You may be using the pipe because you want the barre chord changes to be crisp and clean all the time. On alot of songs part of the barre chord sound is the change. Get your strums to fit in with the move between barres and the strings that do sound can add thwackity thwack. See my posts on 'You're No Good' and 'She's Not There', was practising these a few hours Sunday afternoon but still need to work on the timing.
