Topic: Raindrops keep falling on my head: WOODSTOCK 1969 A MILESTONE?

- Why is woodstock a milestone?
I THINK THAT WOODSTOCK 69 WAS
1) probably the BIGGEST GIG with the BIGGEST artists
2) very chaotic + how many people there did really listen to the music?(THANKS FOR THAT ALBUM)
3) I WISH I COULD GO TO A CONCERT LIKE THAT.

PLEASE WRITE YOUR OPINION and did some of you have been there?
QUESTION: Who were in fact the REAL HEADLINERS? JIMI? I believe that this was really the "start"

WATCHING THE MOVIE, I ALWAYS THINK is: WASN'T IT THE MOST DANGEROUS CONCERT EVER? NOT ONLY THE PUBLIC BUT ARTISTS PLAYING IN THE RAIN = VERY DANGEROUS OR NOT?

I don't remember who the main headliners were, but I think it was Richie Havens who kicked it off.  Country Joe and the Fish were there if I remember correctly (Joe Walsh's band, pre-Eagles). 

When I say "remember", that's remembering by reading about it.  I was four years old when the event occured.

I don't think there were any headliners - too many of them were huge in their own right!  I think Janis Joplin, The Who, Santana and Ten Years After were maybe the biggest.  Hendrix played in the daylight to a very small crowd by the looks of it and the Star Spangled Banner etc were played over a backdrop of some dedicated litterpickers!

The Grateful Dead played but wouldn't allow their set to be included in the film or album as they were terrible!  The reason for this was that the guitars gave them electric shocks as they played so dangerous?  I'd say so!

I grew up near the town of Woodstock, but the concert was actually many miles away near the town of Bethel. I was only 5 at the time, but I remember folks talking about the traffic problems.

Great Question Doc.

I was 15 when it was on and just remember hearing about the great time had by all and that it was THE EVENT to not miss.
I'm looking forwards to the seeing movie.
As for milestones I think it was a benchmark for the do's and don't's on how concerts should be.
There is not a chance in Canada that a concert like that could happen now adays...B-O-O-O-O.
But at the same time maybe it is good thing???

Not much to add but I use to live in Woodstock and people their seem to get mad about the whole Woodstock thing. after the last Woodstock i think they'd rather just forget the whole thing

Richie Havens did the first set, but only because the other bands were late in getting there.  Iwas 17 and had just moved from Maine to Oregon that summer.

Well that was a pretty cool 1 hour of TV. For those that didn't see it, it centered on 6 people, three were main organizers and three were participants. Lots of old footage on things I didn't know happened, like how close it was to being canceled and how it was saved by a small motel operator in Bethel (small town just down the road where concert was actually held).

Anyone else watch and pick something up they didn't know?

Hi phil,It willbe shown on monday night on the discovery channel here in california. no it was not a dangerous event,they had almost 500,000 people there and no fighting ,just music ,alcahol and dumb drugs. It was the second largest city in the usa for those three days. The biggest problems were food and medical,the government sent the army choppers in with food water and medical supplies,and also medical doctors. It is a must see for any one intersted in music I think. I still have this on vcr and I watch it now and then,I was hooked on Ten years afters performance of going home ( Alvin lee was a great guitar player)  dino48

The Joe in Country Joe and the Fish is Joe Mcdonald. Joe Walsh's pre-Eagle band was the James Gang,thay didn't play at Woodsock.

I may have my facts wrong, it's been so long ago now that I read it" meaning a book by one of the organizers", but yes Ritchie Havens opened the show, Jimi Hendrix closed it after most people left. But one thing I remember reading in that book was that one of the bands wanted thier money upfront, when word got out, lots of other bands thought, hey, maybe we better get ours upfront as well, and it almost canceled Woodstock because they couldn't pay them all up front, but as we all know now it worked out.

I can't remember which band it was that wanted thier money upfront first, but can you imagine if Woodstock had never happened! I seem to also remember that it was the first time Crosby, Stills and Nash Played together in public for the first time. Again things things are kinda fuzzy, my facts could be wrong, but this is how I remember reading about it, feel free to correct any of it.

Reminder - The History Channel show on Woodstock is beginning about NOW (on the east coast of the US anyway).

Legend has it that I was there. But I was just starting high school and my mom wouldn't let me drive from North Dakota to New York with a learners permit. Dang it anyway!

Hi again ,I just got done watching it on discovery channel,it was on  from 5pm too 7pm out here in california. fantistic history.I recorded it too dvd.I am pretty sure history channel repeats there programs,if not they usually sell dvd copys to the public. There is going too be some kind of movei coming out on august 28 th,having too do with some of it.     dino
