Topic: What's a dreadnought?
I'm doing some window shopping for a guitar and I keep seeing "dreadnought". What is it? How is it different than the other steel and nylon guitars?

Dreadnought refers to a body size and shape in acoustic guitars...for a comparison, go to www.martinguitar.com for info... they are a bigger body size and have lots of volume and projection...

The classic example would be the Martin D-29. Quite possibly the best sounding accustic guitar ever made in my oppinion.

I would have to disagree with you there (of course). Yes the Martin D-28 (it's 28, not 29) is a fine guitar, but the D-45 is about the best you can get. They make it from 45 year old aged wood because guitars sound better as they age, so when you buy it new, it's already 45 years old! I Hear they even have a D-50 now, but it's like 200,000 dollars. To address the above question; A Dreadnought is a mid sized guitar, usually with a cutaway. It is probably the most common type of acoustic, although I prefer the bassy sound of my Epiphone jumbo body. If you want a good sound, go with the dreadnought. peace

Guitars sound better with age *provided they are played.* It's the vibration of the wood that causes the sound to fill and get richer with age. If you let it sit in the corner, it will go dead just like a cheap beginner model off the shelf.
Guitars are like boats in that the best way to take care of one is to use it regularly.

That was a typo. I meant D-28. I've not seen a D-45 but I bet it's a bad ass sounding guitar. You might be able to answer a question for me, does Martin make a nylon strung classical? I've been messin with my buddy Jason's and I think I'd like to buy a classical if I can find one just right for me. His has a slightly thinner neck than most with a sound board that can rattle a snare drum (Brazilian rosewood I think)It's an older seventies modle yaree I believe(spelled wrong!!!!)I'm not sure though cause it doesn't say on the headstock anywhere, but I think thats what he said it was.

<font color="crimson"></font>Yes, the D-45 is one of Martin's top of the line guitars...has lots of ornamentation that sets it apart from the other models... They do make a classical model with nylon strings. The guitar that Willie Nelson plays is a 1969 Martin classical... go the Martin website and see all the great stuff!

as long as it was a typo lol. As it is said below, Willie Nelson plays a martin classical, but you won't find one of the same quality as his. You can put nylon (catgut) strings on any guitar really. The
16 Series - 000C-16SGTNE Martin Classical is a good guitar. It has a pickup in it (acoustic/electric) and sounds pretty good. Not sure on the price though.
