Topic: Yuck - soggy mess

I came home from a long weekend visit to discover that a water pressure surge blew out a filter and there was water flowing for four days.  I figured the time from when phone messages started getting garbled.  Six inches deep in the basement.  A mess.  A real mess.

I feel for you Zurf, I flooded in my new home and it makes you want to sit down and cry. Mold is always a serious issue afterwards. Hope it didn't damage too many personal belongings.

I'm glad we have a well-constructed house.  Some homes are now built with engineered joists, and those would have been a disaster with this situation.  The joists in my house are all solid 2x10 wood resting on a 10" steel I-beam as the center support.  Solid construction.  The joists will dry out fine and stay just as sturdy and solid as they ever have been.  Had the engineered ones become as wet, I can only imagine the hassle of replacement ... 

As it is, it looks like almost all of the flooring is going to require replacement, all of the ceiling in the basement, and probably all fo the drywall.  What a mess.

Summer flu.  Is there anything more annoying?  Glad you're on the mend Detman101. 

Well, we're hoping to get a little studio/study space for me out of it.  HA!  That'll be the day.  Not that my wife would deny me that, but it's going to be tough enough recovering smoothly without it.

Every Sunday they flood the fields with the aceqeius (diches) where I live. It floods the road, my yard, my shed, creates a huge mess. I feel your pain

Zurf, couple of things you may want to do. Get you a de-humidifier to help pull the moisture outta everything. Also, get some fans going to keep the air circulating as this will help dry everything. During your remodel of this area it would be a good time install a sump pump and pit.

After the sump pump and pit this is the ideal time to totally remodel the basement into your Dream Basement. A subfloor guitar haven. Totally soundproofed and with fully automated drinks and snacks dispensers.

Seriously though, I really hope you get this all sorted out and fixed up as soon and as inexpensively as possible. We had a similar (though not as serious) problem recently with a leaking water tank in our loft. We didn't know it was leaking until there was water dripping through our bedroom ceiling.
