Topic: I don't know my notes

I am a beginner.  I know a lot of chords and even some scales but it is hard for me to memorize notes.  I do understand some things like scales are named for the notes it begins with (right), but is it necessary to know where every note is on the neck?  I may be mixing apples with oranges.  Do I need to know this for playing for instance the A Minor Pentatomic Scale?  Any suggestions for a newby is appreciated.

payjack welcome to Chordie, you may want to start with the basic C scale there are lots of books on basic theory I use Mel Bay I to start my students with it has all the basic information on chords and scale construction also a free program Guitar Alchemest is a great tool just google it up and pick the free program I think you will really enjoy it because it has all the scales and modes plus a thousand ways to make each chord all the way up the neck and down good luck smile

Hi Pajack, and again Welcome to Chordie!

As usual Russell has it spot on!  It is good to have a concept of where on the neck notes live, and it all relates to chord building and scales.  There are a bunch of folks here on Chordie that understand all the "theory" mumbo-jumbo much better than I, and through the posts and questions/answers over the past few years I have a glimmer of understanding now.

Visit often, don't be shy about questions and have a good time with your music.  We're all in this thing together!

Doug
