Topic: WHERE THERES A WILL THERES A WAY

I will be playing some gigs as a single and one of the things I needed was a stand for my bass so I could play it and not have to put a strap on so I checked online for a stand and the only one I could find cost around $100.00 with tax and shipping so the old saying "neccesity is the mother of invention" promted me to come up with a solution and I got to thinking that my old boom stand that was laying in the corner could serve a usefull purpose so this is what I came up with.

This is the back view its mounted to one of the neck bolts and I loosened the tension on the strings before I removed the screw total cost for mount with stand 0 smile

Thanks Zurf and this posistion is the exact center of gravity so the bass will not dip forward or backward that was the key, I balanced the bass on my finger first to see where the center of gravity was and thats where I mounted it smile

I think I will get a small clamp and mount it on the bottom so the bass rests on it and that will take any strain off the small mounting screw I also can loosen the screw and the tripod stand pivots and collapses into a compact unit that fits in a gig bag so I dont have to assemble and disassemble each time, naturally the clamp will be padded so I dont mar the finish but I only paid $50 for the bass and if it looks a little beat up who cares? just adds more "earthyness" and soul to it lol

I dont think so because im just inprovising on a idea that has already has been patented I do have a patent on the harmonica holder I use just need a manufacturer smile

if you get any more strings for your bow, your gonna need more bows. your a cleverer person than i thought, and i thought you were very clever!

steve howe of yes has been using guitar stands for several years, but they're not as inventive as yours!

you say your going to put a clamp on the bottom for more support, this sounds like a good idea as things can get rather hectic during a gig and a little knock might tip the balance.

Thanks Phill I did have to rewire the pickups on the bass the rear one didn't work so I took the front one and moved it back it was a hassle rewiring because the pots had short wires and I had to improvise I also had to rout out the pickup cavity and pick guard because the mountings were smaller but I used my old utility knife and whittled away and shaved the plastic till it fit so everything is working but I'm still going to get another pickup and mount it closer to the neck so the bass sound comes out more it was a nice project and everything came out OK I have assembled a nice play list and I'm rehearsing it for a gig I booked still waiting for my new PA to be delivered so I can really push the envelope and crank it up right now I'm just useing my little amp with the volume turned down so I dont blow the speaker I figure it will take a month to really get comfortable with my new gear (I hope) the songs are coming along fine I added A Tom Petty song "free falling" and a Harry Chapin song "Cats in the Cradle" to the list which includes "Shooting Star" and "Ricki dont loose that number" and Reeling in the Years" which aught to get the audience going,so many songs keep me busy I haven't had time to compose anything new but as soon as I get a break or when the creative juices start flowing I will get back to my own stuff again smile

Russell is the original mutant.  If he can write and play a song meant entirely to show off that he can play the Evil B and I can't, playing a bass and guitar at the same time will be a piece of cake.  I'm guessing something to do with a loop.  Either that or possibly Russell has four hands, which would explain how he gets the Evil B so easily.

Four hands lol not quite but I do have a new Boss RC-20XL loop station and a FS-6 pedal to switch the phrase channels up or down so you are correct smile

I was worried about the strength of the mounting so I went to the hardware store and got a single piece of sheet metal that had two holes already drilled I made impressions of the mounting screws on the neck so I knew what size holes would be big enough I have a small table vise so I bent the ends and drilled two holes in the brace and the mic stand and mounted them offset so the bass is at a normal angle I would play it, I wasn't concerned with how it looked in back as its a cheap bass with only one use to add a loop these three photos show the back front and full view of the "HARDING STAND" lol

of course! lol it may just catch on there are a lot of loopers looking for a inexpensive way to mount a bass I know I could have spray painted it black along with the mic stand that was scraped up and I also could have put some padding so the back would not get scratched but no one but me is going to see it anyway I thought of making a video of the process but it was to hot to hassle with the equipment (98 degrees at noon) and tons of humidity I am staying in my cool air conditioned flat till later and then go to the lake I had a rehearsal useing my small practice amp and everything worked so when I get my new PA it should sound really nice still waiting for delivery I will be video taping some songs when I get my PA and upload to myspace so let ya know when smile
