Topic: ELECTRIC JAM HELP??

we have had a jam for about a year now with some electric players and some accoustic with no problems all of a sudden it has turned into a sound war and not sure why. some that have been good about the sound are now as gulty as the new players after several attempts to get the sound down it just goes right back up
any suggestions short of going all accoustic????

Re: ELECTRIC JAM HELP??

A suggestion would be to record and let them hear for themselves a few minutes of recorded sessions can open minds smile

Good suggestion Russell.  Better yet, record first then bring in a hired gun.  Tell them you're bringing in a sound guy/gal next visit.  Tell them come prepared to be critiqued on their levels and tones.  Keep it positive, explain the end in mind.  Then maybe the before & after will convince.

Another problem that crops up in a jam is the flavor/styles could tend to put the electrics and acoustics at odds.  Perhaps on the agenda put electrics in supporting role on some and leading roles on some.  Or alternate each jam to one or the other.

Re: ELECTRIC JAM HELP??

Sometimes people need to hear back to really find out what they are playing. smile

Re: ELECTRIC JAM HELP??

it truely is sad that people think volume and/or speed means they are good i have found old bluegrass songs by the artist that wrote the song it is not played at top speed they have lost the beauty of the song
sorry thanks for letting me vent

Re: ELECTRIC JAM HELP??

Going Acoustic is the best bet, unless you have someone willing to sit on the mixer and keep things in balance.  The toughest thing with electrics is that without individual monitors stuck in your ears, you tend to crank your own amp up so you can hear yourself over the top of the music..... pretty soon the neighbors are calling the cops for noise abatement!

When our bunch get together, Tim our keyboard/Sax player has the power of God as he can be out there in front hearing and controlling everyone else. Had to be someone who doesn't continuously play through every number so he's our guy.... and anyone who doesn't respect that authority gets to go home!
