Topic: NORMAL TUNING VERSUS OPEN TUNING

What is the estimated %:
1) regular tuning
2) open tuning
This question came up while I was watching and listening on youtube to the brandnew GIBSON DARK FIRE, an amazing guitar with "gadgets" who add in fact a great extra possibilities.
During the demonstration he played JUPMIN'JACK FLASH in open tuning.
This give me the impression that open tunings are used a lot more than I taught. Impossible to see on a Stones concert.
I am really confused this time but you create a lot of possibilities here to play "creating and changing" the way of playing the guitar.
- you have a better sound in open tuning
- it's easier to play riffs
- and easier to play licks and solos
I realy would appreciate your opinion.

Alternate tunings open up all sorts of opportunities for different riffs and chords. I will occasionally dabble in them. Soe of them can be pretty brutal on acoustics though (lots of broken strings).

I used to be disgusted; now I try to be amused.

I love using open tunings for slide and fingerstyle playing...I have a Dan Electro that I keep tuned to an open G all the time...

Keith Richards played a lot of the Stones music with an Open G tuning...great for those chunky riffs and such! Sure wished I could play like that...

Open tunings are mostly used for slide playing. A lot of old blues legends use open tunings. Geoaguiar told you about the broken strings, but it is also brutal on necks too. You are essentially tuning a guitar to play an E chord. So the A and D strings are raised (tightened) a whole step and the G string is raised (tightened) a half step. So you can see the top half of your neck is going to have A LOT more stress on it. It is fun to play with though. Just don't use your $20,000, mint condition, first year, family heirloom guitar to do it.
