Topic: ...you know..

Is probably the most used phrase in the USA.
Is this correct, and is there a reason?
I heard it on a concert a while ago, where the singer, when he was telling little stories in between songs. Like: I've been, you know, to Arizona, you know,.....
I believe every language has his "kind of stop words"

- MY GUITAR PLAYS EVERY STYLE = BLUES, ROCK, METAL, so I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY IT.

Re: ...you know..

Lieven,.
not just the USA, this is commonly used a lot in the UK as well.
It is a way of the speaker ( mostly unconciously) making sure you understand what they are saying.

I hear a lot of people saying this when talking and when i do I reply "no, I didnt" or "no, I dont know"

another one is when people are talking, especially europeans speaking english they say "ehhh" or "ummmm". Maybe they are trying to imitate an engine but really i tihn kit is they are trying to think of the word to say

Ken

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: ...you know..

It is correct.  There is no reason.

Re: ...you know..

You are correct Doc. It's one of those things we say that has no meaning. I've always felt that way about prefacing something with "in my opinion" (even though I do this frequently!); if you're saying it it's obviously your opinion or factual in either case no need for the phrase. Another is "basically".

Re: ...you know..

I know a lot of people who use these phrases constantly.  It irritates me because I hear them during their normal converstaions.  It just becomes a bad habit.  I guess it is what is is, right SouthPaw?

I use that 1 too. This thread is teaching me that although I know it's wrong I do it anyhow. I also try not to use "ain't" and curse words but have not been able to shake either.

Re: ...you know..

"You know" is another terrible speach habit like the overuse of the word "like". Like, you know, man, it's very difficult to break such a habit once the pattern has been set.

We pronounce it "Guf Coast".
Ya'll wanna go down to the Guf?

Re: ...you know..

It just seems like people have replaced "um" with "you know" or "well" (is a deep subject for shallow minds) or "so" (buttons on your underwear). The phrase I catch myself using a lot is "watcha gonna do"...in my defense though, I usually say that to someone who has complained about the same thing for about 10 minutes and I'm tired of hearing about it so it's basically my way of trying to politely tell them to quit their cryin"!

I've gotten so used of hearing everyone say these words or phrases that I kind of tune them out...watcha gonna do wink

Re: ...you know..

My father-in-law stuttered and took speech therapy several times as the stuttering returned from time to time.  One of the things they taught him was NOT to use those phrases but to repeat what he had just said as it would help to trigger his mind to release the words that were trapped on his tongue.

Re: ...you know..

"Actually" That's my word. I use it alot though I hadn't noticed till my wife pointed out that she thought when we first meet it was interesting when I said actually cuz it sounded like I knew something more than she did. After 8 years together she says it's annoying to hear me say "actually" cuz it sounds like I know more than everybody!! I don't even notice when I say it!!

Re: ...you know..

A short phrase I think is getting a little worn out is the "hello" in reference to someone not understanding and it seems like everybody and there uncle is useing "duh"or "doh" smile

Re: ...you know..

Most people who use these phrases a lot probably don't realize they are doing it, until someone points it out to them.

Re: ...you know..

I believe that it is really complex to explain this.
If you should count the "euhs" we say every day, it is unbelievable.
I have 1 interpretation and also I believe that RUSSELL is very close to the solution.
1) WE DON'T DO THIS ON PURPOSE
2) SO THIS MEANS SUBCONSCIOUS.
3) AND, YES it can be very irritating IF YOU PAY ATTENTION.

Re: ...you know..

Hi Doc,

I think you have hit the answer on the head.  Some of the very phrases you all have put forward are running rampant through the English language.  Granted some are cultural, and some are regional, but most are subliminal, and we who do it most do not even realize how bloody annoying it can be to others.

The bright side is that I seem to omit most of mine when the medium of communication is written.  Might have something to do with having time to compose thoughts more precisely, and putting forth effort to be understood, or even better... not to be misunderstood.
