Topic: ROOF TOP GARDENS

I just planted my peppers and Roma tomatoes and the radishes go it tomorrow it was a job lugging 120 lbs of topsoil upstairs to where my garden is but it was necessary because last year the tomatoes and peppers didn't yield as much as I had hoped for due to the fact that I didn't have enough soil in the containers so I filled them to the top and I'm looking forward a good harvest this year how many members have gardens? (the legal crops) lol

I planted peppers and tomatoes.  That's all for me this year.  I tried watermelons last year, but the gophers like them as much as I do.

Got my Tomatoes going, the big kind, big enough that one slice is big enough for a good old mater sandwich! I use to grow other things but my garden spot is to shady now.

I have a big garden every year, growing tomatoes and peppers together or close to each other, will cross pollinate each other resulting in small yields, they both produce flowers before fruit and will trigger each other to small fruit or yield. An old farmer told me this and I can remember when tomatoes and peppers were too close the result was small yield. Something to think about..

Re: ROOF TOP GARDENS

Well, I got me a little garden, going. Got me some peppers, 'maters, okra, straight neck yellow squash, white acorn squash, pole butter beans, Texas cream peas, G90 sweet corn. Everything is up and growing. Got my bean poles up for the butterbeans, got my 'maters stuck, and just as soon as I can get the radiator back in my tractor I'm going to put the amonia to my corn and lay it by.

Re: ROOF TOP GARDENS

Russell, have you tried growing potatoes in bags up there and if you can get them, try Sparta tomatoes, beautiful taste, although they could just be an English brand.

Cabbage, lettuce, rasberries, stawberries, beans planted in my garden along with the neighbours cat. They are still looking for it.

It used to strut past my window with that 'I'm going to dig up your plants' look on it's face. It didn't look that cocky when I levelled the 12 bore at it !!!

Re: ROOF TOP GARDENS

Russell, got 10 acres here in NE La. Just about everyday we see deer, turkeys and other critters. My garden space, this year, is about 100' x 120'. Lotta work but well worth it when you set down to the dinner table.

Charlotte, nice place for a cat.

Re: ROOF TOP GARDENS

Have a look at this, it will give you an idea. You don't have to buy these bags, you can use any old container or sack. Make sure it has drainage holes at the bottom.

I have a typical suburban garden 60x25ft lots of shrubs and roses. Grow some annuals from seed in my greenhouse.
Used have an alotment and grew most of your usual veg but didn't have the time to do it justice....
Growing some courgettes this year.
I used to grow tomatoes in the greenhouse just to see how many trusses/Toms I could get on a plant and ended up with so many toms that I didn't know what to do with them....

Re: ROOF TOP GARDENS

Just landscaping.  "Annuals" is a dirty word in our house.  Perennials all the way.  Just water 'em and forget 'em.  I prefer raised beds so that I can run a weed whacker along the edge and be done with it.

I do have a small area where I garden with my kids.  This year, they wanted to plant wildflowers instead of vegetables.  That's cool.  We put some in.  There's a sage plant that has absolutely taken over.  It's a monster movie - maybe "The Sage That Ate Cincinnatti" or something like that.  Anyway, it's huge.  And now it'll have a bunch of wildflowers growing around it.

Re: ROOF TOP GARDENS

Way to go everyone!  Nothing better than going out to the garden to pick your own food.  I don't grow as many veggies as I used to (we have a great farmer's market each sunday very close that I buy local produce, chicken, bison etc) but I still have a very lovely herb garden, all perennials with some annuals thrown in each spring.  I usually grow some arugula, lettuce and spinach in a big tub each year now.  Tomatoes most years too.  The rest of the yard is all perennials, vines, trees, shrubs, lawn for Bocce Ball and a hammock and a few pots and hangers of annuals around.  That's enough work for me.  Gotta save sometime for playing the guitar.  wink
