Topic: West of Washington DC metro folks

I know Detman and Jets60 and Oldnewbie and I live out here.  I know a few other folks in the area who aren't on Chordie but who do enjoy some strumming.

Let's think of a place where we can get together and have a little acoustical jamm session.  How do Saturday, June 6 or Saturday, June 13 sound?  I haven't talked to my wife yet, but I think we may be able to hold it here at my house if there are no other church or scouting events in the way.  I didn't see anything on the calendar, but I am calendar-challanged.

I have a small back yard, but it's big enough for kids to play if Mommas or Daddys want to come (we have a playset and there's a field behind us perfect for tag or kickball), plus I have a comfy campfire ring set up in the shade of a big maple tree.  If someone absolutely, positively must plug in, there is power.  If it rains, we can go to my family room or set up some outside shelter.  There's also a park nearby where we could rent a pavilion cheap.

No promises yet.  Let me see the level of interest, and if some Chordians want to jamm a little and teach each other a little, let's try and work it out for a few hours of fun.

If not here, then let's see if we can find an understanding campground with late "quiet hours" and make it an overnight event.  I know of at least two convenient, comfortable, and clean places along the Shenandoah without even thinking about it.

Not June 6.  Scouting conflict.

Yeah Russell, trains come close enough.  Little place in DC called "Union Station".  You may have heard of it...

Sorry Zurf, it is a bit of a long trek from Portugal so I afraid I will not be able to make it. I hope it comes of and you have a great time, it sounds like a load of fun.

Re: West of Washington DC metro folks

Hey Zurf - My favorite place for that is Lewis Campground up in Shenandoah Nat Park or heck I got a big enough deck but you know it is going to start getting warm by June. How does Lewis Campground sound? It's just south of Big Meadows not far from the Sperryville entrance. You're up in Leesburg if I remember right so your place would be good too.

Re: West of Washington DC metro folks

Lewis Campground sounds nice.  I'll keep it in mind.   That's getting to be a pretty long drive for Detman, though.

I am in Leesburg, which I think is about mid-way for you (Gainesville), Oldnewbie (Haymarket), and Detman (Frederick).  I've got a couple buddies here in town, and another couple from over the mountain near Front Royal who'd be interested.  We could be in danger of too many pickers.

Let's see if anyone else comes out of the woodwork.  I'll have to dig up Oldnewbies e-mail address to invite him as I don't think he comes around Chordie forums any more.

It will be warm by then, but we can have some cool drinks standing by.

Re: West of Washington DC metro folks

Count me in for events at Zurfs backyard and within driving range of an hour from me.
I just want to play with someone besides myself.

Wait...that didn't come out right....I meant using the looper function in my PX4D!!

The 6th of June sounds good to me.

Should this not be in "My Local Band"?

Is anything really made up of zeros and ones??

I don't think so.  We'd need a name to be a band.  And members.

6th of June is out.  Scouting conflict.  I'm looking at the 13th now.  We've got two maybes, and I've got a few non-Chordie friends who're interested.  I think that's good enough for some backyard picking.

I'll get this underway and post back with details.

Hey Zurf- My calendar is marked! Looking forward to it!  I thought old newbie was in Dumfries? If he's in Haymarket I can give him a ride.

Re: West of Washington DC metro folks

If I wasn't going to New Zealand with my mother, (I'm back her little kid) I would have AND time AND money to travel to VIRGINIA.
Is that a great state, I read, and what about West Virginia? Do people say I am from Virginia, if they live in Virginia.
I swear: next year I go to the USA, but I can't travel alone because of being disabled, so I need a partner in crime to go with me.
I pay the tickets + 250$ extra, I can't pay everything like food, hotel/motel, but you will see me (if I still among the living then.
Yes to New Zealand, anybody from there? It is very far, so people tell me that I am crazy to do this in my condition. Answer will follow after the trip.

Re: West of Washington DC metro folks

Doc -

Folks from Virginia have three ways of saying it.  If they are from the Washington DC suburbs, they say I'm from Northern Virginia.  If they're from around Richmond, they generally go by the county they live in.  Folks from anywhere other than the Washington, DC suburbs or around Richmond say they are from Vajenya (trying to spell the accent with phonetics).

Folks from West Virginia generally say they are from Nameoftown, West (by God!) Virginia.  And it is God's country too.  West Virginia is a beautiful state.  There's a lot of poverty there, but it is beautiful.  By and large, the people are sensible and kind too.  The sort of person who'll ask before he helps you out of a jam.  They ask because they don't want to interfere where they aren't wanted, not because they're hoping you say no.  There's a few nutters, but you've got that anywhere.  What the government is letting the coal companies do to those mountains is shear lunacy.  There's a kind of coal mining now where they basically just blast the top of the mountains off and pick up the coal.  It completely destroys the environment and the beauty and is flat-out sinful.  There's a big movement to put an end to it.  You'd think we were in the early 19th century before anyone knew or cared what happened to the environment.

Re: West of Washington DC metro folks

Jesus, thats horrible! Aren't they concerned about the environment at all!?
I mean, I'm no big environmentalist but heck, that's just unacceptable!!

Re: West of Washington DC metro folks

Back to a jamm session mode.  It looks like we're on.  I'll start a new thread as this one is somewhat old and got sidetracked (no complaint there as I assisted in hijacking my own thread, just a statement that it's so).
