Topic: (Uke) Tuning Pros and Cons: Open G

Hello Ukesters,

I have been playing baritone ukulele maybe 3 months, and I when I started I tuned it to open G (DGBd) because I already knew chords in that shape from banjo in a music class in pre-history..


Now I am wondering what kind of trade offs I have made for myself as opposed to standard tunings.  When I was starting I didn't know enough about anything to know what I was getting myself into.

I don't have any problem with all the chords I've tried to learn so far, but one thing I have noticed is it's probably harder to pick out a pentatonic scale with this tuning than what DGBE would be...

Any thoughts?

I think different tunings are sometimes better or sometimes worse depending on how you want it to sound or the style your playing.

Because of the limits of a 4 string instrument it is best to use different tunings to expand those limits.

My advise is get multiple Ukes and tune them differently.Try a song out on all of them to hear what sounds best.
