Haley Westonra is from New Zealand, early 20's not pretentious (Katie Marshmelua take note), don't think she writes but has a voice that cuts, it could cut glass but I find it cuts my heart!!!

She's a honey too!

I'd have to agree with Russel and the others about Bonnie Raitt, she's great singing as well as playing her slide guitar, she has a unique voice. Russel, The name of the John Prine song she sang was called "Angel from Montgomery" I was lucky enough to see them at the same outdoor concert back in 1976 in Galax Virginia, as well as many others there, it was a 3 day outdoor event great fun in the mountains of Virginia.

Hey Bensonp, I definitely have to agree with you on Melanie from the 60's, from the same era there were a few other greats like Laura Nyro, PP Arnold and for the lowest gravel grader voice of that era Maggie Bell from Stone The Crows. In the rock department Doro Pesch can hold her own imho with any male rock star on this planet, as a solo artist or as the front singer with
German band Warlock.

And No wonder I dont blame anyone for not mentioning her. just full of warbling for long lengths of time does not make her a great singer like millions think she is.

And Cindy Lauper has been mentioned a few times?????? why??????? she really has a bad voice and singing voice and bad make up and bad hair and bad legs and bad fingers and bad dress sense and bad eyes and bad musical taste and anything else that is bad she is it. lol

When she played it in a different room I found I liked quite a few songs off it and I tihnk she can sing good live too

Debra Harry is ok voice wise.  Janis Jopin, never one of my favorites, but she did have a powerful vocal style.  Grace Slick, and this is by her own words, did not have the most musical voice, and she described herself more as a "power" singer.  She could carry a tune, but, on tunes like "White Rabbit" she could certainly belt it out!

I never knew that was  John Prine tune.  I have her singing it on an old album. Love it.  That's really cool that you got to see them both back in the day.  Wow. 

Wow, we're really digging up some great female performers and don't forget the post is titled "performers" not necessarily singers.  That's why I put in Grace Slick and Janis Joplin, not my favorite singers either but great performers.  smile

Hey buvvy, I just heard about Laura Nyro Friday night.  Elvis Costello has a new show on called, Spectacle.  Elton John was the guest.  They sat and chatted about his love of music and who inspired him and who he got to play with in his early years.  Elton was a HUGE fan of Laura's.  They played some tunes as well with Elvis and his band.  Great show.  I have to check out this Laura Nyro now.  Cool.

I mentioned her in one of my posts on this topic.  Love her.  A friend of mine from Texas introduced me to her a year or so ago.  Bought a few of her songs off iTunes.  Her new album isn't on there though and that's the one I really want.  This is the title track, check it out.  Missunderstood.  smile

Pink is very self spoofing and tongue in cheek.  I also give her props for not taking herself too seriously.  She does have a powerful voice.

Pink I already mentioned.  smile  I think she's pretty cool.  smile  I'll have to check out the other new ones mentioned.  Thanks guys.  What a great and varied responses from this topic. 

Here's another one I like.  Wallis Bird.  Here's a bit of info on her.  Pretty amazing that she can play the guitar left handed or at all!

"Five: the number of fingers on Wallis’s left hand that were severed by a lawnmower when she was 18 months old… And four of them were sewn back on. ‘Pretty good for 23 years ago, eh?’ she says, waggling them. Born left-handed, soon after coming out of hospital she was trying to play her guitar again, even though she was heavily bandaged. It was good physical therapy, she thinks. To watch her strum and bash and tug at her guitar now, you’d never know. Indeed, she wouldn’t be the mesmerising guitar player she is now if it wasn’t for the accident: her injuries meant Wallis learnt to play on a right-handed guitar, albeit one flipped upside-down. Which means the strings are back to front. Which means Wallis Bird’s chord fingerings and playing style are pretty much unique."

Here's one of my fav songs of hers.  The Circle!  Her album, "Spoons" is defintely worth a listen to.  She just looks like she's having so much fun.

Sheryl Crow, Lisa Loeb, Bonnie Raitt, Gwen Steffani, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Alanis Morrissette Not forgettig Amy from Evenescence. I'm weird...  I am female and prefer female singers. The boys just don't really do it for me, vocally that is! 

My absolute fave is Sarah Mc Laughlain, think I spelled it wrong. Her voice is haunting. Every song feels personal if you get my drift. It may be a woman thing but she makes me feel human. Like for a second, my heart is out there on my sleeve no matter what I'm going through.
