Topic: I love this one: DESCRIBE YOUR COUNTRY IN A POEM

Since we have so many members and probably from different countries (AM I WRONG TO SUGGEST THAT 75% ARE US CITIZENS?) I really would love to see what you write about your country.
I would really love to read it, so PLEASE, COOPERATE, it isn't difficult.

I was born, raised and studied in Belgium long ago
There was no choice, my mother told me so.
It's here I learned to play guitar, starting in do
There are a lot of countries where I would go.

Our national dish is a steak with french fries
why did they call it french? It started here, no lies
in a lot of countries they only eat a lot of rice
a combination with dog meat and a fistful mice.

We have a lot of rain, the grass is green and taxes high
the more we work the more they take, and I don't know why
we have beautiful old cities here, centuries old a pleasure for the eye
great places to eat, "haute cuisine" tasty and exceptional, I can't denie

these old towns so magnificent as they were painted in a blue, blue sky
Belgium is only 35.500km², not so big and tourists passing by
if you come to here, go and see some cities, don't be shy
surf around, you'll see I'm right, take a plane to here and fly

THIS IS WHAT I MEAN, DESCRIBE YOUR COUNTRY OR STATE, LIKE I DID

"Our national dish is a steak with french fries"

So the restaurant that sold mussels that I ate in on Montparnasse in Paris was fibbing about the Belgian national dish ! I want my money back !

Re: I love this one: DESCRIBE YOUR COUNTRY IN A POEM

They call this place a paridise,
I never want to roam.
Through sunset and sunrise
I call this place my home

The place i grew up in
I never want to part
She's called Cape Breton Island
The isle of my heart.

From the great fortress at Louisburg
to the shores of Inverness
She'll take you in, treat you kind
Her people are the best

In days of old she mined the coal
Sydney made the steel
Now just good memories
no more driving wheel

When you go down to her shores
you'll see what I mean
Fish,boat, waterski
go swimming in her sea.

Of all the places in the world
She's the one for me
I never want to leave you
My island in the sea.

Re: I love this one: DESCRIBE YOUR COUNTRY IN A POEM

Badeye,

That is brilliant ! I loved the mix of place, history and industry.

This is a poem about Ireland that I wrote many years ago. There are a couple of lines I couldn't remember, so just did something new.  Some vocabulary for the  lirish words might be useful ( apologies if you already know them )

a cran ( in this case not a tree) is an "ornament" played on the flute when you drop into the note you want to play from the note above or below - like tapping the flute.

Croker is Croke Park GAA ground in Dublin

Craic is the boasting, complaining, laughter and crying that make up a good night out.

Ireland's not one place,
It keeps moving about.
Just when you think it's settled
It'll leap up and shout.

It's a land where the rivers
Run slow-winding and long
And the crans of the wooden flute
Sing out it's song.

It's the bustle of Belfast
And  the cliffs of Connemara
The Croker in Dublin,
And the burial mounds of Tara.

It's those amber Bushmills waters
And that lump in your throat
Waving goodbye to family
When you leave on the boat.

It's the craic in the back bar,
The horizontal rain,
And the laughter and the boasting
When you come back again.

But much more than that
It's a tiny wee spark,
That lfe-loving glimmer
In each Irish heart.

It's in each generation
Wherever they may be,
At home on this island
Or far-flung across the sea.

So if you've a glimmer of Irish
You can call your own,
There'll always be a welcome
Back here at home.

Re: I love this one: DESCRIBE YOUR COUNTRY IN A POEM

Here's a little thing I wrote in 2000, it's about my home town Llanelli, Wales, known as Sosban [saucepan] due to the saucepans on the top of the goal posts at Stradey Park rugby ground. And the reference to scarlet shirts is the colour and nick-name for the rugby team.

Sosban, Llanelli

There's a place where the rolling hills of Wales come to an end
In fields of green and golden sands
Where tin and coal and copper worked by men
Who worked until their lives did end

Where rivers run through valleys
And they find their way to the sea
where lies my home town; sacred place
Sosban, Llanelli

I look out from my window
See the Gower looking back
The estuary in between
Ebbing out and flowing back

The streets where miners trod-in coal
And sang their way to work
And tin men of a Saturday
Pulled on the scarlet shirt

There is no other place on Earth
That I would rather be
So I shall die here, rest in peace
In Sosban, Llanelli

While all along the sea-shore
Wild fowl will sing for me
Here is my home town
Sacred place
Sosban, Llanelli

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Re: I love this one: DESCRIBE YOUR COUNTRY IN A POEM

I love this topic Lieven and the idea behind it and also the poems i have read in here so far for one thread makes this the best thread in poems yet. well done

I am going to try make one up on the spot here. see how long it takes time: 20:36

I live in Scotland, it's north of the UK
its a wonderful place or so people say
I have to agree its no that bad
I live here and that makes me glad

hills capped with snow and rivers run fast
eagles fly high as steam engines go past
islands up north and over to the west
I cant decide which ones are best

traditional dress is the kilt, colourful to wear
with a Sgian Dubh* in the sock if you dare    ( sgian dubh....skee an doo. a small knife
under the kilt we wear no knickers, that wouldnt be right
we flash our bums when we get drunk at night

our auld enemy is England though tis all for the banter
we wind them up while we play a chanter**
our auld allience is france but where was their aide
at culloden 1746 where we started to fade

we have a football team that put on a game
although not too good the fans make their fame
we are the tartan army and we drink Irn Bru
now its worldwide, you can drink it too

can you see why I love Scotland im sure that you can
its not for the money or the fake sun tan
its for the people, their spirit and their warmest hearts
for their gentle kind wishes and the deep fried tarts.

*sgian dubh....skee- an- doo. a small knife worm wit hthe kilt as part of the outfit, tucked in the sock

** chanter is a practice pipe for the bagpipes, just like a whistle but not as loud as the pipes

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: I love this one: DESCRIBE YOUR COUNTRY IN A POEM

I agree with Ken on this one Lieven, so here is my offering:

I left the UK in two thousand and five,
I was fed up with the change in England,
So I sold my home and to start a new life,
Bought a caravan and new pastures beckoned.

I wanted a place where the weather is warm,
England is too often very cold and so wet,
It was a big decision to make but
Leaving my family was my only regret.

I came to the very south of Portugal,
To the Algarve that's on the Atlantic,
Sea, sun and sand to enjoy most of the year,
Where life is laid back and not hectic.

The locals are polite and so friendly,
A handshake and "Bom Dia" is the greeting,
A kiss on both cheeks from the fairer sex,
A warm welcome and smile at each meeting.

The food simple, plain but delicious,
Piri piri is the usual optional spice,
Frango, pork and fish are the usual fare,
Served with potatoes, vegetables and rice.

The local wines are inexpensive and fine,
Whether it be the white, the green or the red,
But Madronha and Aguadente take with care,
It is moonshine and will go to your head.

The best thing I have done is to move here,
And I do not want to turn back the clocks,
There are only two ways that I will go back,
Screaming and kicking, or packed in a box.

'Bom Dia' - Portuguese for Good Day
'Frango - very young and tender chicken

Re: I love this one: DESCRIBE YOUR COUNTRY IN A POEM

This is something I wrote during our oppression under the Bush agenda.. I may have posted this before....marcalan

Our Lady                                                        m. mcvicker 2008

On this pier I step ashore
with my wits.. and not much more
among this crowd I’m pushed along
Many faces foreign tongues

I saw the lady as we sailed to sea
I thought her light not as bright as it used to be
and as the fog swept her breast
disappointment filled my chest
as we steamed from Ellis island

And the thousands that came to die for her
the land.. their blood  inters
The pride of many , the hopes of all
as we watch our love ones fall

she was there when we when we left the yard
Her eyes were closed, not to see
With her book, held in high regard,
she almost took the breath from me

Now with hope, I stand on another stage
Ancestral land I have engaged
With so many who leave in disgust
the land given in trust
to those who would stain her page

Oh those that came and we that leave
Sure we all know for those we grieve
Their lives were lost for which we stand
And it is we who became the ghosts of Ellis Island

I thought ; If I had one idea,
and took it from beginning to end.
I would try another.

Re: I love this one: DESCRIBE YOUR COUNTRY IN A POEM

A beacon of hope for all in this troubled world. Hopefully she will be smiling soon.

Hi Roger,
I really like your poem, well done sir!
The "bom dia" saying has made its way to the US in the form of an energy drink! Just a few days after you posted your poem, my wife  walks in the house with a little clear bottle, decorated with purple tribal tattoo art, a flame, and a yellow lid. It's supposed to be a "natural" enegy drink that contains acai juice, black tea, yerba mate', guarana , etc, and is rich in B6 and B12 vitamins( used by the body to convert nutrients to energy). Pretty cool huh?

Re: I love this one: DESCRIBE YOUR COUNTRY IN A POEM

HAHA, I didn't lost my ideas. It is like a flash
ALANSHEERAN my friend, what is NATIONAL here are "FRENCH FRIES", the thing I love, but they are destroying a big part of our culture, is or should I say was the kind of cravans or trailers where you can stand outside and eat those fries in a bag in a cone shape.
More and more those people need to have a "primitive" restaurant, why? I don't really know.
But mussels and steak are the most important things. You should see the restaurants whenn the season starts, they all or most of them (the mussels) come from the Netherlands  and I believe  80% is exported to Belgium.
