Topic: Getting started with jazz

Hey there everyone

This weekend I was listening to the radio and stumbled accross a bit of jazz guitar and well lets just say it was love at first listen. I have been playing guitar on and off for about 2 years and so know most of the basics and can play quite a few songs (mainly strumming though) but wanted to find out if anyone can give a bit of advice on where to start and what scales and stuff I should start learning to get my fingers into the world of jazz.

Re: Getting started with jazz

Practice scales and arpeggios.  In the arpeggios, be especially certain to practice them on minor, sevenths, and minor seventh chords.  Once you have scales down very well, practice modal scales.

Not that I follow my own advice or anything, but if I were to want to play jazz guitar, that's how I'd go about starting.

Once you've got the practicing of scales well underway, go buy some Al Jarreau and George Benson albums.  Yeah, I know Al Jarreau is a singer, but he is amazing.  If you can play what Al Jarreau sings you're once heck of a jazz guitarist.

Hey booga,
Welcome to Chordie. Here are a few links that I think you'll find useful to expand your jazz guitar knowledge. This first link deals with moveable jazz chords(lots of 'em). There are some unusual fingering on many of the chords but I got lots of use from it;

And of course we can't talk jazz guitar without Django;

This is a great song, play it slowly at first, then increase tempo as you become comfortable with the chords

And finally, a site specifically for jazz guitar. (lots of cool stuff here)

All good advice above,if you want to play jazz guitar you gotta study really hard and listen to some George Benson too while your at it theres no easy way just a lot of dedication and hard work,there are some who are just natural but they are the exception not the rule good luck smile

Here's another link for The booga that should be very helpful. It's a pretty thorough gathering of great all-time jazz guitarists. There are no specific tabs or chord charts to instruct specific songs but this link does provide an incredible list of study subjects...

Re: Getting started with jazz

Greetings Booga,

  Jazz is cool and there are lots of good suggestions here to get you on your way.
Check out Justinguitar also for helpful tutorials on the subject and look for a copy of the New Big Jazz Guitar Book of Jazz Standards in your local library.  Most times if your branch has a copy, it is hidden among all the dry reference books that nobody bothers to cruise through.

Well worth a look see...
