Hi ian j,
Here are some links with some starter info in video format:

Most of what is on chordie is for guitar - but once you know the basics of playing bass lines, you will find that chord grids will be very helpful for building a bass line.
Google up 'bass tabs' for tons of sites and tips.
Hope this is helpful, James

the top string (thickest) is an E then A, D,G. Unless you have a 5STRING IN WHICH your thickest string is a B then so on (E,A,D,G). Your best bet would be to get an electric tuner. There fairly inexpensive and save a lot of time and effort.I recommend Korg
just been on both those sites . very useful. muchos gracias...
selso ive just found the bass setting on my korg tuner.tala.....
cheers! good luck, i think bass players dont get enough respect
Tune it just like you tune a guitar. The only difference is that your B and e strings are gone.
I am new to all this, music as well as the computer. I am 53yo and have decided to learn to play the bass. I have no musical experience, (unless you consider karaoke).
I have taught myself to read and play tabs, but I can't find a site that provides bass tabs for the bass like Chordie does for guitar, banjo, mandolin and others. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Glad to see you wanted to pick the bass up. I think that you mean bass tabs, if so there is a good site that has easy bass tabs just for beginners.

Also you mentioned about tuning your bass in, you need a tuner and a lead for this. You want to tune your strings fattest - thinnest, E, A, D, G. If you have not got a tuner, the site I mentioned before has a bass tuner online.
