Guitar chord forum - chordie → Electric → Buzzing sound
I am very very new so please forgive my ignorance. I am getting better with playing separate chords, but still having a big problem when I try to switch between chords, as my fingers start to leave the strings, they start making a horrible buzzing noise. Any advice on how this can be fixed?
It just takes some time. Keep your fingers closer to the strings when your changing chords. If you get the buzzing sound while you are playing chords make sure your fingers are right behind the fret. If you play in the middle of the frets stuff will buzz and sound awful.
I had the same problem when I first started playing guitar.(it was mostly due to that fact that i got my first guitar out of a dumpster). but i found that the buzzing was my fingernails knocking against the other strings. or it might be that the strings are too low to the fretboard. I dunno. my advice would be to check your guitar over and if theres not a problem with it, just practice till your fingers bleed.

<font face="Century"></font><font color="blue"></font>I would suggest by starting with the guitar...check to see if it is set-up and properly tuned. Poor set-up and low tuning can cause buzzing. Then make a chord and strum softly to see and listen for buzzing...You might be fretting in the middle of instead of up close to the fret...if you pick really hard it can buzz...maybe find someone else to play you guitar and determine if the buzzing is from the guitar or your playing technique...lots of variables and hopefully you can solve this and enjoy learning and playing...
Can you discribe the sound, is it from dragging your fingers on the strings which would sound like your dragging a pick on a wound string? If it is an acoustic guitar when strings are new and you drag you hear the string scratch.
As mentioned in a previous post long finger nails or improper finger placment or pressure not allowing a clear note. When you play just one string open (no finger pressure on the string tryinh to make a note) does it buzz? If so this can be a high fret or if it is an electric guitar with an adustable bridge the strings are too low.

Sorry for the late reply, I have been away... Anyway the buzzing seems to occure because the string is still vibrating pretty hard as I take my finger away, so it starts to sound as if the string is not being pressed (fretted?) hard enough. I realize that this maybe because I am trying to switch too fast, but thenhow do you play fast? A friend of mine hinted at the fact that my fingers need to be precisely perpendicular to the fret board? What do you think? <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_redface.gif" border=0 alt="Embarassed">

you might want to concentrate on hammer-ons and pull-offs and throw in some trills and vibratos,my all time favorite sweep picking,ya know?
maybe your guitar is fretting out,have you ran another guitar through the amp,could be loose ground,go have a set-up done on it and your problem will probably be solved.
Ok, I think I got it. The sounds seems to happen, when I fret closer to the head.
Than it's probably too low of tuning.

dansprwow, as you can see from views your post has gotten a lot of attention yawgmoth! i think most new guitarists i know have experienced a problem pretty much like this, i found that i needed to press harder and place my fingers right begined the fret. oh and also i found that my strings were kind of coiled around the tuners, overlapping as they were wound around it. ive since fixed the prob and it produces a much better sound and stays in tune for longer.
