hows things nocking?!

i started playing a few years back but only learned to play chords.
i was wondering if anyone had a few tips they could share

there are newbies to experienced guitar player on here. (  as well as banjo,mandolin,uke players)

I'm a keyboard player who does a single act from time to time.  I have a hard time figuring out some guitar licks by ear.  I've noticed that tabs will reveal what the guitar is playing, but I really don't know how tabs work.  I see the guitar neck, and I think I understand the frets, but I don't.  Help.
