Topic: How do you read chord?

Hey everybody, I am new to playing guitar. It's been about 2-3 months and I am really loving it. I am confused as to to how to read the chords though.

I understand what the chord is and how to play each chord. I don't understand how I am supposed to know when to play the chord, or what type of strum to use. Do i strum on teh upbeat or downbeat?

Here's an example:

    G                          C             G                         D7
Hey, where did we go       days when the rain came

        G                          C            G               D7
Down in  the ho    llow        playing a new game

Ok, so the fist chord is a G chord, how many times am i supposed to strum the G chord. Is it one strum of the G and then one strum of the C and then The G Nd then the D7 and repeat?
Does my question make sense? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Re: How do you read chord?

DDUUD works well for this song... Play that pattern on every chord. Try playing it along with the song to get your rythym. This songs Intro is also quite easy to play and fun to pick. I'll see if I can find an accurate tab of it to post for ya! -Pix

[b][color=#FF0000]If your brain is part of the process, you're missing it. You should play like a drowning man, struggling to reach shore. If you can trap that feeling, then you have something.

Thanks for the tips Pix!

I'll give it a try tonight

I assume listening to the song is the only way to tell the rhythm then yes? There is really no way to know jsut by reading the chords?
