Times have changed, when rock and roll first started there were only a handful of artist and since this was a new industry they were sought after to sign lucrative contracts and offered large funds upfront to insure they would sign a contract but as more bands jumped on the bandwagon (no pun intended) record companies realized they were the ones in demand and sought after so the music industry came full circle and if you don't have a proven track record like a lot of CD sales there not interested so its become what can you do for me not what can we do for you and most of the record companies are going broke because independent producers have moved in and developed new talent and marketing strategies that bypass the old guard and reach a fan base via the internet, radio and concert tours and there is digital distribution for companies like napster Ipod ect...so if you want promotion you have to do it yourself by paying for a recording session and producing a high quality CD =product then you have a chance to find success.there are no recording angels handing out money anymore most or all of them went bankrupt.
The best way to promote a product is to get out there in public and play the heck out of your product. There are no short cuts. Walk the walk, sing the songs, play the gigs..........Or maybe get a spot on those clown television shows such as American Idol and subject your material to a no talent, loudmouth, trying to control the music industry with a foolish gimmick...........Nah!!!! This crud will soon cease to exist, take that to the bank!
Get some gigs, play your music, tell your stories, if it's good you'll continue to play out, if it's really good your mesage will reach the proper channels and your venues will grow in size and demand........There are no short cuts, I can't stress this point enough.
Believe in yourself and love what you do, don't let temporary obstacles deter you from your ultimate goals.

Daddycool,
You're a gifted lyricist and I'm sure your songs are more than worthy of notice and great acclaim from others outside of our Chordie circle. It's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Just keep writing your wonderful songs and get out what's within. Self expression and pleasing yourself with your songs is the most important thing, in my humble opinion. Thanks for sharing your gift with all of us here at Chordie.

ps-don't sell yourself short, there are lots of successful musicians out there who have 'made it' that certainly don't have the 'golden tongue'. And remeber that the performer is always their worst critic. Keep on keepin' on.........
Two Words: Bob Dylan. The best vocalist ever??? Nope. One of the most influential??? Yep!
Do it up.
