Too many to list! A few would be Chet Atkins: Don Rich (Buck Owens) Redd Volgart: Danny Gatton: James Burton: Eric Clapton: Stevie Ray Vaughn: Many who would not be guitarists without Chuck Berry: Lightning Hopkins: Robert Johnson: Wow...just too many...

Concerning virtuosity: I think Malmsteen is one of the best, no surprise because at the age of 5, he already started to study music, especially classic, which you can hear when he plays, he is even part of his guitar.

BUT don't forget Keith Riff RICHARDS, I love the way he plays, a lick here a lick there, a lot of riffs, and also Robben Ford and the leadguitar player in the underestimated group STEVE LUKATHER, I stick with those two, keith & steve

Re: Who is your guitar hero?

I reckon all the big hitters have been mentioned; Clapton, Beck, Page etc. So I'll just tip my hat to a few that might not be the greatest players ever to have callused their fingers but still give me hours of enjoyment listening too or watching them in action.

In no particular order....apart from the god like genius at the top.

Re: Who is your guitar hero?

Right now, Ron Benise, a flamenco guitar virtuso and a down right genuine nice guy. (WWW.BENISE,COM)

I seen him on a PBS (Public broadcast channel in th USA) special. His phrasing and structuring were phenominal. I had been looking for his cd's but at the time they were only sold on the web. Anyways I finally found Nights of Fire in Walmart. I meet him this summer at the county fair. I didn't know he was going to be there but we stopped for some eats and his show was going to start soon.

I bought another cd from his booth he took the time to autograph it for me and chat for about 10 minutes before and after the show.

Give him a shot he is real fluid in his playing.

Re: Who is your guitar hero?

James Burton - Elvis's guitar player in the 70s, I deeply envy his picking style.

Dave Gilmour - of Pink floyd, control, stately pace, grace.

Dave Stewart - stinging performance live but just doesn't come through on the Eurythmics live CDs.

Jeff Beck - wild, wild stuff on the Yardbird's 'Roger the Engineer'.

Paul Brady - deft, swift, intuitive. The quiet man of Celtic music. Writes and plays with Bonnie Raitt but check out his comp 'Nobody Knows'.

Re: Who is your guitar hero?

Jimi Rules!!! Gilmore Rules!!! and Zappa Rules!!!

also, every electric guitarist should know about Charlie Christian. He was one of the first guys to ever plug in (play electric)

he played with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, together they would have been the front runners of bebop, unfortunately he died in 1941 of TB. one year before "bebop" became "bebop"

Re: Who is your guitar hero?

I got a guitar because of Eric Clapton just floored hearing white room twelve years ago as a teenager. Over the years I learned playing the guitar that feel is more important than getting songs note for note, and now im trying to write songs because I find learning a song note for note gets old, and loses its magical touch.

Chuck Berry is another one I learned from is the basics to jam on guitar.

I know there no way around not playing something Chucky influence did not touch.

The handsize is a problem with Chuckie tunes, but learning a few Chuck Berry licks paid dividends; as a result, I learned CCR, Yardbirds, Rolling Stone, Led Zepplin songs and licks from learning basic Chuck Berry songs.

Re: Who is your guitar hero?

I have been following this thread with interest and surprised that there has been no mention of Hank Marvin. Oh well, perhaps I am just too old and it is all youngsters out there in Chordie land.

Hank Marvin! Mind you, he was a big influence on many a guitarist that emerged from the UK shores in the '60's, Pete Townshend, Peter Green and Clapton to mention a few.

If he's the reason that I have the pleasure of listening too Townshend then he's a darned good choice.
