Topic: help!

there are several songs that i want to learn, and most of them require a "hammer", please explain what a "hammer" is as i've only been playing for about a year and have not come across "hammers" untill now
all help is greatly appreciated

Greetings Haagenater, and welcome to Chordie!

  I am thinking that the Hammer you are referring to is a "hammer on", is a method in which you depress the string with force causing it to sound without plucking that string.  I would refer you to look up Andy Mckee on you-tube as he uses a lot hammer-ons in his music, for a good example of hammering with the fretting hand as well as with the picking hand in one of his tunes called "Driftin".

A 'hammer on' as is the proper terminology, is when you play one note then quickly drop a
finger down on the string to sound another note. example: play the top E string open, then while it is still ringing drop your ring finger down on the third fret, same string. Thats the best way I know how to explain it. 'You do not have to strike the string again'. Hope that helps!

Hi Try looking at expertvillage on you tube they have a good lesson on Hammer on's and pull off's

        It will add a lot of colour to your playing once you master them...good luck   smile
