Topic: Composit Acoustics

I got to play a couple of these carbon fiber beauties today.   Holy smokes was I surprised at everything.  There isn't a matchstick's worth of wood in any of them.  The finish them with automotive finish.  They don't have truss rods.  They're made of a single piece of carbon fiber laminate.  You can stand on them, completely submerge them in water, and leave 'em in your car all winter long.   They are impervious to heat and humidity.

And they sound delicious.

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: Composit Acoustics

I picked up a black 7i a couple of months ago. My main reason for purchasing was the durability because I travel for work weekly. That said, this is among the best sounding guitars I have ever played.

Re: Composit Acoustics

Sweet guitar Jeff! Here's some composite guitar testamonials from some actual owners of these dandy jewels of musical tool. I wish they wern't so danged expensive! A composite guitar is perfect for those who play in extreme climates that have adverse effects on wood.( shrinkage & expansion)

Give everything but up.

Re: Composit Acoustics

Using stable materials makes perfect sense to me. Rainsong guitars are another maker of carbon fiber instruments.  Jerome, I hope Santa Claus comes through for you!

Re: Composit Acoustics

Topdown,

Were you able to find these guitars in a store to play before you purchased yours or did you, hear one,I go to alot of guitar stores but I  haven't seen any.

I live in wyoming and it is very dry here and my guitars don't like it .I have a HD-28 that is very vulnerable to the temp changes and dry heat.My other guitars can handle it better.I would like to hear more about your guitar.I like a booming bass and a full rich sound.

Thanks Wayne P

Re: Composit Acoustics

Thanks Toney - I am real pleased with this purchase. The CA would be great for your venues, unfortunately they are not making a lefty yet! I suppose you could reverse a dread if you were so inclined.

Wayne - I played some of the older models at a shop in Boone, NC a few months back, but had not played a 7i series before purchasing. I had read reviews of the cargo and other i series (i stands for integrated bracing) and read that these models had a better bass response (and boy, do they!)

I bought mine from Danny at Acoustic Pro Musicians. He is their largest dealer and seems to have the best availability. He was a pleasure to deal with and I highly recommend him. Link to his inventory page with actual pricing (page down for the CA's):

And here's a link to a video review from Acoustic Guitar Magazine. The review is the 5i, which is identical to mine except for the finish.

Wayne, I checked the dealer list on CA's website and there really isn't anything near you. Most internet dealers have a return policy that allow you to try out a guitar and return it for full refund if not happy (but usually you have to pay return shipping). Danny's policy is a 48 hour trial.

The ones I played were about $1400 US.  If you convert Euros to American Pesos, you might call that a bargain.  big_smile

Re: Composit Acoustics

I played a 5SE.  Really cool inlayed graphics all over it.

That 7 is cool.  Does having the tone hole up by your arm bug you at all?

Re: Composit Acoustics

Jerome - The offset sound hole is not a problem at all. As I understand it, that is what allows for the integral bracing that really adds bass punch. If anything, the location allows the player to hear the instrument that much better. It doesn't come close to my hand while strumming or fingerpicking whatsoever. The sound hole is not noticeable at all while playing. Watch the video link I posted and you'll see what I mean.

I paid $1850 shipped - Not that expensive if you consider the tone and playability is comparable to some high end guitars - and like you say, it is virtually indestructible.

Re: Composit Acoustics

Hey tops, This may be a stupid question, but I'm curious... With an offset soundhole can you change the sound by strumming/picking closer to the bridge or to the upper regions of the top bout. You know what I mean, Like strumming an ordinary soundholed guitar before, over or past the soundhole. I'm guessing it still changes some but how much?

Re: Composit Acoustics

Hey Topdown, I see you were on the acoustic guitar forum and had a look at the tobacco burst model like yours, I am liking that one a lot, I usually don't care much about pretty but that is a cool looking guitar if they sound as good as they look.I am just wondering if the dreads would have more punch.I kinda like the old cowboy lookin guitar like my HD-28.I sure wish somebody had a store full of them i could give a try.

Re: Composit Acoustics

Interesting question (and result) Pix.  I just compared it to my Tak side by side, strumming open in roughly 1/2" increments. Both guitars have a higher pitch when played nearer the bridge (duh) and get deeper as you work toward the fingerboard. Whats interesting is that the Tak levels out while strumming over the normal placed soundhole, whereas the CA just keeps getting deeper. Once I reach the fretboard, they both seem to level out evenly. Another benefit I had failed to realize!

Nice! So you get a broader range of tones! Cool! I really need to try one of these before I go much further wink

Re: Composit Acoustics

Wayne - I really do like the tobacco burst pictures I saw. At first my thought was that was kind of hokey - wanting to make a carbon fiber guitar look like wood, but the pictures changed my mind. I also thought the blue and red (which were the only colors offered originally on the 7i) were too flashy for my abilities, so when Danny had a prototype black for a great price, I jumped on it!

I played a dread when I was in Boone (Legacy series I believe it was called). It had lots of punch, but I can't say it was that much more than the 7i. You can't go wrong with either model IMO. They are great playing and sounding guitars.
