Re: Songwriters Circle

Thank you James and Ken,

James, I wrote four songs for the love that never was (I hasten to add she has in fact become a good friend). I am working on the other 3 to depersonalise them and will post them here as soon as they are ready. And James I would never describe your songwriting as gravel, I, and I am sure many others, enjoy your contributions - keep them coming. But the big question on everybodies lips is what has happened to Hot Monkey Love ?

In answer to your question about the equipment I use, Ken. I had to rebuild my PC last September and I did go OTT on the soundcard. I bought a Creative X-Fi Platinum which has the big advantage of having a front panel with all the input and output connectors, but I could have probably managed just as well with a cheaper one. James's song and my two songs I created the same way. I used Band-in-a-Box to make the basic backing track and then transferred this to a Tascam 4track Portastudio where I was able then to record a second guitar, oohs, arrs and harmonies on to the track. Then record my voice and playing over this finished backing track. I bought the Potastudio second hand and for little money a few weeks ago and it makes multi track recording easy.

I wonder if you James, or Ken or anyone who is follow this thread has any songwriting projects on the go at the moment that you can tell us about.

Re: Songwriters Circle

Yes - I have some songs in the oven now. Have sort of violated my own advice and let one become too precious and am sort of stuck on it at present. The one I'm stuck on will actually be 2 songs when it's done (same story from 2 perspectives).

Have a couple others underway, one about single-gender soap operas for the easily amused (sports), and another that seems to be about materialism (mini-storage facilities & what's inside all those little buildings).

i thought after listening to really silly naff lyrics on a silly pop song that I could come up with something sillier. So, I wrote this.

I have not recorded it yet and I hope I remember the melody of it when i get to record it at the weekend or next weekend, but I do remember the chorus was fast, but I might change the melody.

{t: I used to}
{st:Ken Godwin}

C# m A7
I used to be a tree frog
         D A4
But now I’m a happy man
I used climb the highest trees
But now I don’t think that I can
G Em
I used to smoke cigars on a rope
But now I eat pies from a tin
I used to sacrifice goats to the dead
now I attend church and confess my sin

chorus.
           D G
I used to I used to I used to I used to X2

            G Em F C C#m A7 C#m

C#m
I used to be a racing car driver
Now I’m a corpse going up in flames
I used to be a tv talk show host
Now I want to present some games

G
I used to find myself at bedtime
Now I just lose myself in the dark
I used to bleed from my eyes
But now it’s only when I walk in the park

Chorus

G Em F C C#m A7 C#m A7 F C A7 (X2) F C C#m

C#m

Re: Songwriters Circle

Ken, "I Used To" is great fun - love the humor. Perfect proof that even lousy pop tripe can be the inspiration for a song.

Re: Songwriters Circle

Ken I can't wait to hear the performance of "I Used To". Proof that even the most unusual ideas can be the inspiration for a song!

Re: Songwriters Circle

Hello all in the Songwriters' Circle - I just posted another song, see "Flabby-Assed Buffoons" thread. Another song in the Country&Western style . . . I seem to be stuck in 'country chord hell' lately. Not a bad place to be, but everything I hear in my head lately has a country twang.

Re: Songwriters Circle

I have just posted my song "I Need You By My Side". which is another love song.

I have also today remembered another song I was working on a little while ago that I was not happy with but with a sudden inspiration I think it might now go togerther. Some work for the next day or two I think. I'll keep you informeed.

Re: Songwriters Circle

Hello everyone,

After giving you two sentemental love songs I have done something rather different.

I have just posted my new offering "My Friend Pete" to the forum. Pete has been my friend for 15 years and he came to me yesterday moring with this idea for a song. The idea was so appealing that I spent yesterday writing and recording it and today creating the video. Pete has approved everything as the project developed and is really pleased with the end result. I hope you enjoy it too.

Re: Songwriters Circle

After a string of tongue-in-cheek twangers, I have finally broken free of 'country-chord hell' (I hope). Was becoming concerned that the only stuff I would ever hear in my head again would have a nasal twang and big shiny belt buckle.

Just posted "With You" in a new thread this morning - it's an unabashedly tender Valentine's love offering to my Goddess . . .

Hi Everyone,

I have just posted my new song "Warning" on the Forum. This is a song I started some years ago and never finished until now. I thought it was better to post it after Valentines Day, but pehaps it would have been better before.....

Fellow troubadors and troubadettes (?) - I have just posted another song of the 'country twanger' genre. Please see the thread entitled "Those Menopause Pills".

Re: Songwriters Circle

Have just posted "So Vivid" in it's own thread. After the rather snide "Those Menopause Pills" I figured I needed to write a nice song about when we first met!

Re: Songwriters Circle

Just posted "My House of Cards" to it's own thread. It's a rant of the first order - doesn't even make much sense to me . . . but it's quite descriptive and it's fun. Hey, Dylan became an icon with this sort of stuff - - - Happy Mardi Gras!

Re: Songwriters Circle

I have posted a 3-chord waltz, "One of These Days" to the forum. It is a meloncholy little number modeled on John Prine's 'Christmas in Prison'. James

Re: Songwriters Circle

I have been pretty busy lately with work and when not working I have been writing lyrics but no music for them yet. My mind has been doing overtime with lyrics in work too, bits of paper filling my pockets. I think instead of writing lyrics down I will do what an old songwriting friend of mine used to do, wherever he went his small recorder would go wit hhim and he would sing or speak into this device.

I can use my mp3 player for this purpose.

I have been reading all songs getting posted, even if I dont make a comment, some I just have nothing to say about them.

Re: Songwriters Circle

Just a quick comment here on diiferent styles of putting things together. I find myself playing a medley over and over in my head for days and then the lyric comes later and starts to fill the song up. The time frame is always different. As I said, sometimes it's weeks but then again I've written two or three songs in one afternoon That seem to be already done ,I just have to write them down. Whatever makes your bag swag I guess>
