Topic: Finding the Right Notes

I have the words down and melody in my head for a song, I'm writing, but I have a hard time figuring out the notes and chords I'm thinking of. Does anyone have any help, or am I just going to be stuck finding them through trial and error?

Re: Finding the Right Notes

well if you can hum the melody thats in your head just fish around for the chords that sound good to your ear smile

"Growing old is not for sissies"

Re: Finding the Right Notes

Thanks, thats what I figured I would have to do.

Re: Finding the Right Notes

I agree about the trial and error to find chords but I would also suggest you make a rough vocal recording of how you want the melody to sound whilst you still have it in your head....I quite often find that when I start looking for the right chords I lose track of the original melody a bit. Not always the worst thing and quite an organic way to develop a song but always worth keeping one eye on your original idea.

All I got, is a red guitar, three chords and the truth

Re: Finding the Right Notes

Hi Bud,

i must agree with all the above, also when your looking for the chords, try expanding the envelope a bit, eg if you find that the chords flow nicely C-G-F-C,maybe try; C-G-Am-Dm-C.
that was just an example by the way, but i guess you can see my drift, what i'm saying then is; dont fall into the trap we all fall into, dont take the obvious route as thats been done many times before, look for the original, theres always help on this site if you get stuck

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.
