Topic: Saving to My Songbook from Public Songbooks

Hi Sysadmin:

I have a problem when trying to save from a Public Songbook to my own songbook.

Every time I try to do this the song appears in My Songbook as "Unknown" and has no test.

I also just heard from another user who has similar problems trying to save a song from a public book.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Re: Saving to My Songbook from Public Songbooks

Hi Tunedeaf,

I have just copied Amazing Grace from your songbook to mine, however the song I recieved was the original version and not your edited version. (I have since deleted it). I did this by double clicking on the song from the green titles list of your songbook (do not click the 'view songbook' tag) to open it and then using the 'ADD to songbook' halfway down on the right hand side of that page. I hope this helps.

I have done this several time before but have never been able to copy the edited version to my song book so I just keep a printed copy of the edited song I want to learn. On thinking about it though it is probably unfair to put a song in my songbook as mine after someone else has done all the work in editing it.

I liked the songbook you just published though, I shall be spending some time with it later.

Re: Saving to My Songbook from Public Songbooks

Hey Rogerpuppy:

You know, I'm a Service Technician in the real world and one of the things that drive my customers nuts is when their system won't fault for me the way it faulted for them...kinda like your tooth not hurting anymore by the time you get to the dentist!

All of which brings me to your post (and thanks for the feedback BTW).

I read your post and said to myself "Self" says I, "Isn't that the way you always do it anyway?" and just to be sure, I went to a public songbook, picked a likely candidate and followed my standard routine which is exactly what you outlined and, sure enough, this time I got the song saved to my songbook.

Sheesh!

Darned if I know why it should work today for the first time ever, but heck, as I tell my customers, I don't argue with success.

As for the ethics of saving a song from someone else's book to my own after they had edited it, I honestly hadn't thought of this before as an issue, but I can see where some folks might find it an interesting moral dilema.

I figure that every song I find here represents *somebody's* initial effort to transcribe the song and it wouldn't even *be here* if they were'nt amenable to having folks copy it for their own use.

The majority of songs in my songbook have received some tweaking on my part to make them more closely match my ear and ability to play (or inability to play according to some ) and I do the editing for my own benefit.

If someone likes my version and chooses to save it for themselves then I'm more than happy and even a little flattered to have them do so.

Hope this soothes any qualms you might have about saving songs from other songbooks and thanks again for the advice and feedback!

Re: Saving to My Songbook from Public Songbooks

I have been able to reproduce this error. I will fix it soon.

The hole point about Chordie is sharing songs in an effort to learn playing the guitar. I would not feel bad about adding somebody's edited songs to my songbook. In a sense all songs here are edited by someone.
