This is a song about a soldier receiving a fatal wound in combat and having to spend his last remaining hours at night, alone in a field with his fallen friends waiting to die.The time frame in my mind is the American Civil War.Whether it was yesterday, today or tomorrow,righteous or not...war sucks.

For as long as war has been around,there must have been many millions that have died on the battlefield alone at night.How frightening and sad it must have been for them.Never leave anyone behind (American motto I think) must give some comfort to those going into battle knowing in their souls that their comrades in arms will do what it takes to try and not let this happen.
