Hello Brother Chef!  So pleased when I saw another TG player on Chordie,then my little heart sank when I saw your tuning...Damn!I play a Tonewood tenor but have it tuned Irish...GDAE,as is my mandolin,bouzouki and tenor banjo...so way too far down the line to change tuning!I have been building up my songbook,mainly in chords but also enjoy a little experimental picking.Most things I pick up from Chordie (all hail,great site),songbooks and watching on youtube too.Find it helps to re write the lyrics in my little notebook and then highlight the chords above in a different colour...very helpful after a couple of beers!Anyway..my name is Martin Carey from Nottingham,England!Good luck!

I play Baritone Uke and was thinking about getting an electric. So I do a little research and find no electric baritone ukes but I did find Tenor Guitar. This sounds like what I am looking for.

Anyone know a place where I can find a inexpensive Electric Tenor Guitar?

Hi,
I am a beginner at music to a point. But, what I am trying
to figure out is the melody of cording to the notes. I can strum the cords,
but I want to learn how to read the notes then 'pick' the
strings to them. I have a little Martin tenor guitar and I love it,
I have no clue on reading the notes
and then correlating them to the strings...is there a book out
there for a beginner?  that is NOT to a 6 string guitar?
I have found that I can tune the guitar to
the tenor Banjo...or can someone help me out here on this
problem...I need a "BEGINNER" course in music theory on letters
to the notes that match the strings to a four string instrument/guitar (as limited as
a 4 string can be.)

Been a long time but here goes
I play TG tuned adgc just like tenor banjo which I also play.
Have a 1956 Gibson Electric,a Soares'y tenorcaster electric,a,Martin 1950's,and a another old beat up Tg I forget what it is at the moment.
LOVE playing the TG I use a heavey D string and tune it an octive lower in order to get rid of that D string ring most TG's get and it makes for a very mellow sounding Guitar.
Play in a 3 piece group with 2 banjo players that is why I use the Tg to give a little bottom and diff. sound. Thats all for now Have Fun

I play tenor guitar too. I don't play six-stringed guitars. JERSEYDEVIL (above) is quite wrong when he states tenor tuning. Traditional tenor tuning is in fifths: CGDA. I tune mine in the "Irish style": GDAE, same as a violin or mandolin.

I've only been playing stringed instruments since about 1974.  So, obviously, I don't know everything about them.  But, there is one thing I do know. Players will string an instrument any way that they like. Hard and fast rules for tuning any stringed instrument (except maybe piano) don't exist.  Regional tunings exist everywhere.  Ask a delta blues player what "traditional" tuning is to him....Put a blue grass banjo player in the same room as an Irish banjo player and try to find the "traditional" tuning.  I'm currently building a 4 string guitar and its going to be tuned to D A F# D.  I'm not trying to sling missiles here, I'm just offering a different view.

I know that tenor guitar can be a very interesting thing to play. Aside from a high notes that it produces, it would have been hard to play (spam removed by moderator)guitar for beginners[/url] on that accord. This kind of instrument can be a very rare one, if you would pull it through in the long run.

Rickdune,  I'm sort of a rookie mandolin player and I've seen ukele players that play that instrument like a lead guitar.  I'm not sure what the rules are.  Same with guitar.. I've been playing those things for decades and honestly, there's some rules and a thousand different ways to play them.
