No………. But
The question I would ask is what has been lost to music through to the use of drugs.
I think the negative out weighs the positive.
Oh and woof woof……
Ark
Definitely not!! Nothing like a good trip to take you to the otherside, where the faeries show you all kinds of new sounds. The trick is to know when to come back!! (and remember what you learnt)
Sitting on the fence here.Ya gotta admit, many a good tune came from a good high.
Ya gotta admit, many a good musician no longer fly.

I'll say. agree
Badeye..
The more I think about it, the more I wonder how many really good musicians were lost due to drugs and alcohol before their time to shine.H-m-m-m I think I'm leaning to one side of the fence...but only leaning.

Do you mean illegal drugs or all drugs like like, religion, caffeine, nicotine, viagra, etc....?
Used by the listener or by the artist? Let's be clear about this question.
- Zurf
Its hard to say Zurf and Southpaw. If I'm a listener and taking Viagra I don't think its the drug that would kill me. LOL As an artist and smoking two or three packs a day, I would think its the nicotine that would get me.If I had to listen to religion 24/7 I'm guessing that would kill me and if I had to preach religion 24/7...well thats another story.
Such a confusing question...but a good one.
Cheers All

This is an interesting topic. Sure - a lot of greats were lost from drug overdoses, but I think in the bigger picture, music would almost definitely NOT be where we are today without the drug influences that were almost omnipresent in the "counterculture" of the '60's. The culture of the day influenced nearly every major musical group in that period and those musicians impacted and shaped entirely the music we listen to today.
Marley, Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison (and many more) died tragically young. Gotta ask, without the drugs, would they have been the same influence or left the same mark on music that they did? I say not - I can't even imagine Marley without that stoned smile on his face.
Nah i dont think so it is an interesting topic aye i would still say nah
Music today would be a whole lot better. Drugs ruined and killed many amazing guitar players..... I don't see how ppl could possibly ever think otherwise. Drug are STUPID!!!!
Gotta agree with you topdown No question the sixties and seventies was all about the drug movement mixing with music. The music that came out of it would not be the same without it.Crosby,Stills,Nash and Young.I cant imagine life without their classics. Not condoning...joust observing.
Cheers Akk

Now back to the US Open
Now back to the US Open
That was some fun golf to watch this evening! My guess - The field folds tomorrow and Tiger wins easily. (real gutsy call, I know )
lets see..... drugs and music that isnt new musicians were getting stoned as early as 1935 remember billy holiday heroin, louis armstrong mary j (everyday) jene krupa pot,and heres one you proberly didn't know walt disney, cocain and opium ( I often wondered where he came up with goofy and micky and mini) charlie parker heroin, lenny bruce died naked on the toilet with a needle in his arm, almost all the early jazz greats were drug addicts so it wasn't just the bands of the sixties that influcenced music with there lifestyle drugs have been around for quiet a while and were used extensively by some of the most renowned artist thru the centuries from composers to artists the list is endless but as was pointed out they did influcence the bands of the sixties and so on and a heavy price was paid by a lot of very talented artist
Do you mean illegal drugs or all drugs like like, religion, caffeine, nicotine, viagra, etc....?
very good question!!
Alcohol is a drug and probably claimed more lives and illnesses than drugs.
So many song writers have probably wrote songs while under the influence of a bevy or two. I know Paul Weller wrote " that's entertainment" in a caravan while blootered oot his face. He wrote it in a very short time. This song is in the top ten of Weller's songs.
As for the illegal substances, if it was not for them what would famous songs that were wrote while drugged up sound like? would they have been written? Hendrix, Townshend, Clapton, Lennon, Barrett, Cash, and many many more, too many to mention or look up have all wrote masterpieces under the influence of illegal drugs.
In the news the other day the Scottish government ( or some of them) are wanting to legalise cannabis and give the abusers heroin free on the health service. This does not include England so if they went ahead and done this then all the addicts from England,Wales, Ireland and probably the rest of the E.U would want to come live in Scotland to get their free legal hit.
Maybe if they did this Scotland would be full of the best songwriters?
I am totally anti drugs.....then sometimes I am all for legalising them all after 30 years of excellent education in schools.
I have wrote a tune or two while under the influence and I still write one or two while having a whisky or 12. Problem I have with this is if I dont record it straight away then I sometimes forget how the rhythum went the next day and the lyrics become another file in the computer for a later day, and sometimes it never gets opened again.

Ken you are sounding like a pop legend
Well said Russell. If I knew how to put a quote in there I would've. REALLY...Walt Disney.Wonder where he got his inspiration LOL
Hey topdown...The US Open was fun to watch. Makes me wonder if Tiger made a pact with the devil.
This is indeed a great topic.
I know a lot about drugs and the effects because of my profession.
I am convinced that this is a knife cutting on both sides.
It all depends on the person or artist. DRUGS, LEGAL and/or ILLEGAL do change your perception.
Let's take alcohol: is great and you can have a lot of fun if you don't cross the limit. AS LONG AS YOU ARE ABLE TO CONTROL THE DRUGS IN STEAD OF THE DRUGS CONTROLLING YOU there is not a big problem. Starting using drugs is easy, stop using drugs? YOU NEED TO HAVE A STRONG CHARACTER.
Some drugs are extremely addictive. Heroin = BODY & MIND. COKE: Not your body, but your "psyche." ALCOHOL = so normal and social that we don't understand that someone is an alcohol addict.
MY OPINION: DRUGS ARE LIKE AN AMP. They make your feelings 10x stronger. SAD = YOU WILL BECOME MORE SAD, classic case, a woman has a problem, she is very sad, you talk with her and she will start crying, or the typical "uncle" who start dancing on a table on a wedding.
What is the difference between legal and illegal? A VERY THIN LINE. Morphine legal or illegal, the main indication is severe chronical pain. Heroin: still available on prescription. Marihuana or hashish DON'T USE IT WHEN YOU FEEL DEPRESSED or DOWN, you will experience what I mean about amp.
ARKADY WRITES: The question I would ask is what has been lost to music through to the use of drugs.
UPYERKILT WRITES: some artists wrote masterpieces under the influence of illegal drugs.
You are both right. But as already written HOW MANY BRILLIANT ARTISTS ARE GONE? or even they write a great album, and if you read Bill Wyman's book about the Stones THE DRUG SHARKS ARE IMMEDIATELY THERE. Heroin is in use since decades, see RUSSELL, and was very popular in Jazz. Opium dates from 800 AC, morphine was extracted in 1803 and heroin in 1898, coke used for centuries. ALL THESE PRODUCTS STARTED AS MEDICATION. There are no things such as harmless drugs. If you hear the song A WHITER SHADE OF PALE, the lyrics mean nothing and were written under influence.
See what it does to you = AMY WINEHOUSE is THE EXAMPLE. On the other hand more and more artists start to live in a very healthy way, refusing drugs. NOBODY WINS A PRICE USING SUBSTANCES.
KEEP IT CLEAN
Good call Doc...Still sitting on the fence
