Topic: Guitar and Piano songs

Hi everyone,

First up - I'm new to this site and just found it yesterday and I'm very happy that I did - because finding songs and especially sorting them by "easy" for beginners like me is very important - and this site seems to be the best one I've seen.

Now... My friend and I are playing together for fun and learning to play (we are very new). He's playing guitar and I'm playing piano on my keyboard. Both of us are very new and just learning and finding easy songs, that are not the same old "Ode to Joy" and the like, but "real" songs are important for us.

Thats the great thing about this site - you have alot of excellent songs from artists we all know: Green Day, U2, Metallica etc. etc.

This leads me to 2 questions:

1) What songs are great to play for a guitar and piano player?
Most of the time we end up with songs that are either great guitar songs or great piano songs - and therefore find it hard to play together.

2) Any of you guys know about a piano sheet music site, that is simular to this site - with popular music sortable by difficulty?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Guitar and Piano songs

Hello Barnebarn and welcome to Chordie, glad you found us.

For your first question the answer is an easy one. Songs that are good for a guitar player and a piano player are songs the two of you like and are able to learn. Don't limit yourself to learning songs with just piano and guitar. Music is music and notes are notes. There are very few rules in this art of music so go get it and do what you like.

Second question; I'm a piano/keyboard player as well. Guitar is my primary instrument. This site gives the option of guitar chords, piano chords, or bass lines. I use it often and find it to be very helpful.

Re: Guitar and Piano songs

Thanks for the input, SouthPaw41L.

Your first advice sounds just like the thoughts we have had ourselves lately. We really want to find tabs and sheets for the music we like and practice to those songs. For now the problem has always been finding easy compilations of our favorite songs - and when we finally find an easy song for fx. the guitar its then a problem finding the same song for piano with easy piano sheets.

Thats what I really like about this site - its great how you can search for easy guitar tabs/chords in an easy way - and so far I've found easy compilations for all the songs I've tried for wink

911tabs looks like a great site and I will take a deeper look into the site later today when I return from work. From what I can see its not piano sheet music but piano tabs/chords which is different from what I'm used to playing - but knowing all the major chords it should be fun to try out later today.

Just wish it was easier to sort out the easy songs for the piano without either having to play one-handed songs or fully blown out two-handed expert versions with many 8th and 16th notes (which is impossible to play for me at my skill level).

Re: Guitar and Piano songs

Hi SouthPaw

Being a keyboard player and a guitarist, you may be able to help.  My daughter wants to play along on the piano with her brother on the guitar.  At the moment she is only playing the chord once to each time he changes chords...yet he is strumming about four times in that time.  Is there anyway to describe what she should be doing whilst he is strumming?

Thanks for any help you can give us.

Re: Guitar and Piano songs

Hi Tats_too and welcome Chordie.

Sounds to me as if your daughter is on an appropriate path to learning. As long as she is changing chords at the proper time and playing the correct chords, the 1 to 4 ratio will balance itself out as she becomes more familiar with the songs and more confident with her playing. The "shadowing" or "highlighting" she is doing with the guitar part is a very common practice in many styles of music. And perhaps when your daughter "catches up" to your son maybe they could learn a "piano" song in which the guitar "shadows" or "highlights" her piano playing. ( i.e. Let It Be, Lean On Me, Piano Man, etc) Congrats and big "way to go" to you for encouraging your kids to play music!
