Topic: New Guitar in the UK

Hi, I've just started playing guitar again after about 17 years and I enjoy it more than ever now, so I want to buy a new acoustic. I've got a budget of £400 and I don't need an electric acoustic. I like David Gilmour, Radiohead type strummin/picking so what would you recommend buying in the UK?

Cheers Guy's and Girls.

Re: New Guitar in the UK

Hi Pixm and welcome to Chordie,

This question gets asked a lot and in reality only you can decide what suits you. Your best bet is to visit your local music stores and try out their stock until you find one that feels good in your hands, sounds as like and suits your wallet.

Personally I do not care what the label says on it, I play the guitar not the brand name, what feels good and sounds right is the guitar to choose.

Please let us know how you get on and what you end up buying.

Re: New Guitar in the UK

Thats a fair comment. I will spend a few hours in a decent guitar shop and decied on the one which suits me. Does the rule apply that the lower the action the more buzzier the guitar? Do the more expensive guitars have low actions without the buzz?

I went into Dawson's the other day and they tried to sell me a Farida D-52NS. They said Farida make some of the top guitars out there including Martins, Taylor, Tanglewood, stagg and so on. Heres the link:

I'm a newbie but I've never heard of them. If anyone else has what do you think of them?

Does anyone know a decent acoustic guitar shop in the north west, cheshire, manchester area?

Thanks

You could try these two:-

It's a while since I was in there but they had a decent range of acoustics and they seem to have a good reputation

I've never visited this one but the Warrington store gets great praise on other forums

Hope this helps

On any guitar, regardless of price, the lower the action the easier it is to play however if it is taken too low the strings with catch the frets as they vibrate causing a buzz. Most guitars will benefit from a visit to a competent luthier to lower the action correctly, but play the guitar for a while first and decide what gauge strings you intend to use BEFORE having it set up. In my opinion light weight strings may be easier to play with but they sound thin and reedy, the medium and heavy give the best tone. You should ask what gauge string are fitted to your new guitar when you buy it to give you a starting point.

Re: New Guitar in the UK

Without wanting to put a dampner on your visit to backalleymusic, I've found that some big stores tend to neglect the guitars on show. They can be dusty, extremely out of tune and very badly set up (if at all).

I left Glasgow's largest guitar shop disgusted at the state the instruments on show were in.

I guess what I'm saying is be aware that this can happen. A lot of large stores are not interested until they see the cash. Mind you, £400 is quite a wad so they may be nice to you.

Also, if you have any niggly wee doubts about any guitar don't let them talk you into it. Be totally satisfied with your choice. And if you're not, go elsewhere.

Sorry for the negative vibe and all the best when you get down to it. I love guitar shopping!

Is anything really made up of zeros and ones??

Re: New Guitar in the UK

Hi Pixm,

If you havn't already bought your guitar then a couple of good shops to try are

Soundcontrol in Manchester
Chase in Manchester
John Rose Music in Sale

I'll leave it up you but Chase is suprising reasonable and put Dawsons to shame.

Good luck seaching.
